Here is an interesting thread where SOB owners are talking about the MPG they get with their rigs. I think it's interesting that all of the respondents are running significantly newer drive-trains than any of us with all the benefits of electronics, but no better mileage.

I wonder what that fellow thought he was going to get. Headwinds and
towing a huge cement block should have killed any expectations he had for
fuel economy. An extra mpg by installing a $5K Banks system should pay for
itself easily in the next 500,000 miles....not!

The jeep actually weighs 5047 lbs. with a full tank of fuel. But we always plan to pull it with only about a half tank at the very most

because 10 gallons of gas makes such a difference on top of 5000 lbs!

I can attest to the lower mileage regardless of drivetrain.

On my trip to Camp Verde Rally with my 2009 4.6L V8 Sport Trac and 6000 Lb trailer, 70MPH or less, including climbing the big hill at 70: 9MPG Water tank was empty due to anticipated hookups at the campsite.

On my trip to Tucson, same rig, mostly flat, 70MPH or less 8MPG. Both trips about 100 miles each way. Had full Water tank on this trip. Dumped waste about 45 Miles into the trip.

Of course the frontal area of the trailer is a big brick.

I could hear the airflow.

Overall weight of the rig is 11,000 lbs, about the same as the GMC. The little OHC V8 was sucking down the fuel on the climbs. The six speed auto did hunt a few times. I was able to maintain speed on the climbs though.

I had the truck on the scale yesterday at the metal recycler 5,060 LBS.

Oh, and this is with oxygenated fuel. Which sucks for MPG. When they used to switch between "winter" and "summer" fuel I noticed a 1-2 MPG drop on my usual daily commute.

The best I ever got (I think) in my GMC was about 8 MPG, usually closer to 6 before the carb rebuild and intake replacement.

10 gallons of gas is what 80 to 90 lbs? I always keep the towd full of fuel... just in case I need to use it. I _AM_ driving an OLD motorhome!

This guy is traveling with well over 20,000lbs, in a large brick shaped rig, at 70 mph, with a gasoline powered motor and expecting good gas mileage. He MIGHT get it slowing down and using a diesel.

I also see them worried about the trasmission down shifting, thinking it is hurting mileage. That's it, lug the engine and expect it to run efficiently.

I do like another persons comment: "I didn’t by a motor home with the thought there would be a payback down the road." Laughing
