Not too complicated. I have attended McGuires training on their products.
I am not pushing any specific brand though because nearly all have products
with the same features.
If the coach is heavily oxidized, start with a 1,700 rpm buffer (not random
orbital) and a medium cutting compound. Tedious, but the entire coach has
to be done. Apply a line of product about two feet long, then buff into
the compound applying pressure on the "heel" of the buffer one way, then
move the buffer back over the same surface gently applying pressure to the
"toe" of the buffer. The new foam cutting pads work well for this and it
is very hard to burn any surface with them. Eventually, you will get the
hang of using the buffer and you'll like the results. When finished with
the area or side of the coach or whole coach, remove all traces of the
cutting compound with a clean towel(s). This entire process must now be
repeated using a light compound, often called a swirl remover compound,
using a finishing foam pad on the buffer. By now, the paint should look as
good, if not better, than new. Unfortunately, you're not finished at this
point. The paint will oxidize rapidly at either of these two stages and
must be sealed. One of the better products out there is McGuires No. 20,
polymer sealant. Hand apply if you are a glutton for punishment, or do it
the easy way with a random orbital buffer (Sears, Porter Cable etc.), then
wipe off the residue and enjoy the way your coach now looks. The sealer
outlasts wax by months. The average auto wax generally lasts between 3 and
6 car washes, according to Consumer Reports. This stuff is good for better
than 6 months and at that point, it can easily be reapplied. A note of
warning, the Wen random orbital polisher is a real POS, the weak area on
these is the very crumby switch.
If anyone with a badly faded or oxidized coach is planning on attending
the GMCWS Spring Rally this month in Amado, contact me and I'll be glad to
give a demo session on this topic. I have all the necessay machines and
compounds so you have nothing to lose.
