With my recent purchase of a GMC 1975 Eleganza II, I have felt very
intimidated by the number of experts, rumors, myths and “upgrades” that are
promoted by owners and Third Party Service Providers (3PSPs) for the GMC
Motorhomes that were built from 1973-1978.
So I have formed a "GMC Myth Busters" Committee to test what is true. If
you want help me in this new endeavor, please join this committee
http://www.reverselogisticstrends.com/company_focuscommittees_index5.php?showlist=true&FC=47,
I would welcome you.
This committee will meet on a monthly basis (via WebEx Video/Conference
Call), and the Charter is;
· To test the validity of rumors, myths and “upgrades” that are
promoted by owners and Third Party Service Providers (3PSPs) for the GMC
Motorhomes.
· This committee will use scientific methods of engineering and
ergonomics testing along with field trials and customer service surveys to
evaluate/determine the validity and claims of the rumors, myths and
“upgrades. All results will be published to all interested parties without
conclusions, just the " bare facts".
· Since the most stated mechanical fatigue area is the Front
Suspension and Steering our first project will be to test the “Installing
the One Ton Front End Version II”
http://machinesoflovinggrace.net/gmc/frontend/ compared to the GMC original
design.
Best regards,
Gailen Vick

Gailen,
Welcome aboard. I think we're going to enjoy having you here.
I look forward to the results of your studies, and will probably
participate as soon as I can sign up (I have the 1-Ton installed).
However, with all due respect, I really suspect that the bottom line will
be about as definitive as that you'll obtain from comparing Hershey Bars
with Baby Ruths.
We're a widely diverse group with strongly held opinions; facts and figures
don't necessarily enter into our equations.

Sorry to be so negative , but good luck.
One person's "You have to have this" is another person's "Why bother, It is a waste of time, effort, or money".
We all have our biases and opinions. I do not know how you are going to filter those biases and opinions out of your findings. Your output will only be as good as the biases of the contributors / evaluators.
Here are some topics:
Modern web based forum vs. email
Synthetic oil vs. Dino oil
3000 mile oil changes
Oil brands and weight
ZDDP content of oil
Mobil One grease vs. Synpower
Tires, tires, tires.
Tire replacement interval
Jumpering out the neutral safety switch
Rear disk brakes.
Everyone needs to install a combiner
2 bag vs. 4 bag rear suspension
Reaction arm rear braking vs. stock
Replacing a good intake iron manifold with an aluminum one.
OEM vs one ton front suspension
Recore vs. new aluminum radiator
180 vs. 195 thermostats
OEM Carb vs. Fuel injection
Final drive ratios 403 vs. 455 vs 500 Cad vs. diesel
Steel vs. aluminum wheels
Tire sizes
Magnets in or around the oil filter.
Premium vs. regular fuel
Coach painting
Good luck. I hope you accomplish something good. I'm just not too optimistic.

I actually think this is a good idea, but I also think it would be a lot of work. Science is long term and tedious, with a lot of measuring.
It is certainly true that for every motor vehicle sold, there are people without engineering degrees who think they can make them better. I tend to think that the vast majority of the time, they can't improve on the original, but there is a percentage of the time that improvement happens.
Two areas where good arguments for improvement have been made are with headers, for better cooling, and the final drive, for acceleration and mileage. Maybe qualifying also is the 12v JC4 brake vacuum pump, for braking after the engine quits.
I wish this effort well, and hope for some real science in this. Tedious as it might end up being, it will be a benefit to the nice people in their nice GMC motorhomes

I suggest you start with Bill Hubler's earlier document since that
outlines some of the reasons why the kit was designed in the first place.
The instructions for installing Manny's Version II kit give only
a very brief summary of the reasoning as an introduction, and are
primarily devoted to the mechanical installation of that kit.
For Bill's presentation, see:
http://www.gmcws.org/Tech/Hubler_1-Ton_Hubs_2007-09.pdf
The original front end was designed for a much lighter vehicle.
If you find anything to refute that fact, that would certainly
be interesting.

Rob, you are right... Benjamin Disraeli, 1st Earl of Beaconsfield, talking
about politics said the statement you quoted in the 1800's. Particularly
fitting in this discussion of using scientific fact to analyse upgrade
preferences. Seems to me, that one of the worst things to happen to the
GMC would be if there was a single, definitive upgrade list.
List/forum/facebook discussions would die down and there woud just be a
manual in the glovebox.

I do. Just under 10 barefoot, just under 9 with the Toadstone trailing along behind. i.e. a ten percent mileage penalty. I don't find that untoward.
