Does anyone know which key blank is the correct one to use for the entry door?
The PO at some point had it copied to a funny little Briggs & Stratton
key, which works just fine, but is a bit tweaked, and doesn't look
good on the ring. He later lost his original.

Joe Ekl, who's to be a Dothan, knows what key blanks were used. I know for
the ignition there were two but not sure about the door.

Of the five sets of keys that I have in front of me from Curtis, Ace, ilco,
the reference # for ignition is B-50 and door lock is B-51. On another key
that has a black rubber mold on the head of the key the # is B-48P

hmm. My ignition key says B44, and doesn't have any brand info. Might
be the original, though, it's awfully shiny for a 40 year old vehicle
key.
As mentioned before, the door key I've got is a Briggs & Stratton key,
which, despite George having one too, doesn't seem right. (also, mine
has no stampings on it whatsoever, and it looks like the sides were
ground down to make it fit into the lock)
The shop manual says stuff about coded keyways on the ignition and
glovebox, and that the 'other keys' would have a code disk. Obviously,
I don't have a code disk, and i'm actually more interested in which
blank is correct, since the GM door key from my dad's '86 Suburban
fits into the lock, but not as well as the Briggs & Stratton. (it has
some extra play in the vertical direction, where the Briggs & Stratton
has a bump at the base which eliminates such play)
It occurs to me, that on every multiple-key vehicle I've worked with
before, the glovebox has used the same key as the doors. I'm gonna go
see if the B&S fits my glovebox, because then maybe I can find
somethng stamped on the lock cylinder.

The rounded one in is picture fits my door. The rectangular one partially seen in the photo fits my ignition.

The door latch on my '78' Royale is made by the same company that makes Peterbuilt/Kenworth trucks. Should have no problem finding a key made there. I am so pleased to know that at least part of my GMC motor-home is made by Kenworth, a truck I drove for over 1.5 million miles. :-)

SIR; I believe the early 73 models had a different door key type blank. Like a briggs or KW. Don`t know when they changed to the GM door key.

I just checked the keys for my '76. The door also is B49, the ignition B50; both from TrueValue hardware.
Sure wish Joe Ekl had some labeled "GMC".
But I don't think this will help with the '73.

here are some hints on door latches
-----------------
I brought my bad cylinder to the local Kenworth dealer, and they had the
new ones in stock. It is just like the old one, except that I had to
grind some of the flanges off each side where the slide-clip holds the
cylinder to the door. The newer ones use a big snap ring that did not
look like it could be used on the GMC. (Unless there is another Kenworth
part that truly fits as is.) The part number for a set of two cylinders
is 30GN15. They are not $22 or $30 for a set anymore, though; I paid
just over $60 for the pair. (Some of that may be the normal
"California/Bay Area tax", though.)
