I just got a call from a GMC at AL Joe Wheeler State park and his engine will not turn over. I will be going over in the morning to see if we can get it started.
He has good battery. I had him turn on the lights and try and start it. The lights stayed on so it is probably not a battery connection. Still could be a connection at the starter.
He thinks it might be the started. I was thinking of jumping the solenoid to see if that was the problem before changing out the starter tomorrow. Any idea as to what to check. He says he has had a problem a couple of times when stopping for gas it did the same thing and when cooled off it started.

Someone who has been through this drill before will probably jump in, but if I were checking this one out, I'd want to make sure I knew how to bypass the neutral safety switch, especially if I wasn't getting any joy from the solenoid. That and the ignition switch.
I'd be trying to verify my 12v was getting to the solenoid. Do you have the schematic?

Wouldn't be heat related, but maybe bad neutral start switch on the steering column? I would expect at least a click, unless the solenoid was bad.

I had this happen to me - I had the battery jumped but nothing - so figured
it was the starter, went and bought a starter went under the coach and
dropped the starter and Low and Behold about 6 inches of battery cable came
with it. The cable had been up against the exhaust and burnt right through.
So next check the cable - the cable was a 8 dollar fix. I went ahead and
installed the new starter anyways.
Then another time the coach stopped dead in the middle lane of the 7 lane
turnpike going into LA at rush hour. It was the Module in the Distributor.
So it turned over but would not start.

My culprit when that happened was a broken cable to the starter. It
looked good, but was broken inside the heat-shrink at the connector on
the starter end.

Had similar problem. Chuck Boyd adjusted something on the lower steering column that is activated by a rod while turning the key. Works good now. Thanks Chuck. Perhaps Ken Henderson or others can supply pictures of what I am attempting to communicate. :-)

When my 23' exhibited the same symptom, unplugging and replugging all the steering column plugs healed it.

I have had the same problem myself, I would turn the ignition switch on and
the generator light would come on, try to start and I would loose all
power. Tried the boost and it would turn over, start, and stay running
(have combinder). I replaced my starter neutral switch with one from the
donor coach I had and everything seams to function normal again.

Who is it Art? Someone from around here? I was up in Ardmore a couple weeks ago in my coach and a guy said that he had a 75 that had sold at auction that morning.... He didn't know who bought it but said it needed some work and he got $8K for it. It was a GMC wet bath coach bed in back.

Of course I know who YOU are Art. I asked "Who is it Art?" Poorly worded sentence. Should have written "Art, who is the GMCer?

You need to determine if it is one of 4 things
1. Power missing to the starter
2. Solenoid not being energized
3. Starter gear stuck in the flywheel gear (Flywheel equals flexplate)
After that we can get into the details of what is wrong.
Turn on the headlights and have someone watch them.
Turn the key to the start position.
Do the headlights dim? If yes, then you have a low battery or dirty cable connections or a stuck starter.
If no, then continue to the next steps
Turn the lights .
Have someone listen to the starter solenoid. Try starting it several times. Can you hear the solenoid click each time you turn the key?
NO = a problem in the solenoid circuit which includes the neutral safety switch, ignition switch, and the solenoid itself.
Yes = a bad starter, a bad cable between the starter, and the boost solenoid, A bad solenoid, or a solenoid gear stuck against the flywheel teeth.
I would also try holding the key in start and moving the gear shift lever in and out of park a few times. There is a good change this is the neutral safety switch slight out of adjustment (worn). Exercising it might get it to the correct position to make contact.
If you want telephone help diagnosing this, look my phone number up on the black list and give me a telephone call. If I do not answer then call my cell which is the same area code as listed on the black list plus seven three zero 0954.

I'll try that next time (there always seems to be a next time). It will save grubbing around on the floor up front...
