I was outside (putting in my new Lenzi relay arm, no less...) when I heard this terrible, wonderful noise that only a bunch of radial engines can make. A B-17 flew almost directly over my house at no more than a couple thousand feet altitude, and made my entire day (and that's a day that includes improving my GMC!). Heart-stopping visual, that... the men who bundled up and flew those tin cans over Germany have my undying gratitude and admiration.

Mark;
If not for the guys who flew those wonderful B-17's.
My family would not be here in the U S A today.
You see our mother went back to Denmark in 1936 and could not get out ahead
of the Germans.
So she went under ground as far a as being a U S citizen.
After the war.
Our mother, dad, my brother and myself came back on the first ship out of
Denmark to the USA via Baltimore MD.
Then by train to L A and on to San Diego in my grandfathers 1939 Chevy.
I'm forever grateful for the many men in the military who gave so much of
them self's.
If not for them I would be living in Denmark speaking German or dead.
The B 17 was here in San Diego last weekend at Gillespie Field El Cajon.
I believe its the only B 17 still flying.
Yes Mark the sound of a B 17 is some thing very special.

While not technically flying, there is a B-17 on display in the Portland area:
<http://thebomber.wix.com/bomb#!history>
It is currently partially disassembled (no motors, nose section or gunners blisters) it is where you can park under it.

How many GMC's could you get under those wings?
Might be a good place to have a GMC breakfast meeting...

I may of posted this already - skip it if you've seen it:
Sounds which get your attention immediately:
A radial engine coming up to takeoff power (Corky Fournoff's Bearcat comes to mind)
Hailwood (I believe) on the high bank at Talledega on the Honda 250GP scooter in the 60s
My old (reengined) Plymouth jsut before you pushed the next button on the TorqueFlite (383 with long rams on)

Howard, here is a little known fact. YOU have my family's REAL last name. They escaped Denmark about 70 years ahead of the nazi's, however, nevertheless, my last name is obviously not Danish, yet I am Dane all the way. Got changed by some government employee at Ellis Island.
Rob, I had seen this video and it is great. I truly hope that everyone got to watch it with their sound on. The music has been used at Oshkosh many times during various solumn events. The old gentleman and the beginning and near the end is/was a Doolittle Raider. The various flights shown where there are old piston pounding fighters alongside modern jets are "Heritage Flights" are are quite moving.

I asked one of the pit crew, "What if he misses a shift?" the guy said. "$50,000." Even then I'd believe it, the thing turned up ridiculous RPM.

Johnny,
You're correct about Mike riding the Honda 250GP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwINcFAshlM
And here's what it sounds like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oIJT4TXoq1A
Sounds like a current generation F1 car!
The bloody thing was so fast that when it would show up at a race everyone else raced for second place!

Those Gp 250 & 350 cc 6 cylinder engines that "Mike the Bike" Hailwood
rode came on the cams about 17,500 RPMS and made good power to nearly
24,000. Absolute red line on the 350 cc engines was about 500 higher than
that. 250cc engines somewhat higher. The clutches were the biggest
problems. They (Honda) solved that by making the basket smaller in diameter
and adding a few more plates to the stack. When those engines "grenaded "
there was very little to be salvaged. They made the most godawful exhaust
wail that you have ever heard in your life. Still runs shivers up my back
just thinking about them.

It came over my house a little later while I was stuck fixing my sprinkler. That's the kinda noise that grabs kids attention and aspirations. At least it should. I'm not sure how the sound of a windows computer booting up would ever stimulate anyone's imagination.
