What should or must be done b/4, one moves a 10-15 yr setting GMC MH, 500
miles?
1. Drain all fuel from both tanks. (Is there an additive that can poured
into tank that will flush out or fix old fuel?)
Do 1976 - 1978 GMC MH have fuel tank drain plugs in either or both tanks?
If not, how does one empty fuel and varnish that is still in a 10 yr
setting coach, b/4 its moved?
Can an owner do damage to a GMC MH engine by starting it by adding 5
gallons of fresh fuel to the 10-15 yo existing gasoline?
2. Replace fuel filter. (Which is generally where?)
3. Install good tires.
4. Check airbags for holding air and not leaking.
5. Check or replace what else?
Ron

1. How much old fuel is in the tanks? Answer will depend on that, however, 10 year old fuel is a major problem. Add Seafoam or Stabil to fuel tank, keeps crud in suspension.
2. Fuel Filter is in the QuadraJet Carb. Use flare wrenches and remove carefully. It is possible to easily mis-thread the fuel filter body and ruin the inlet. Carry several filters, you will get good at replacing them until the mess that was gasoline is out of the system. Search the site for the correct wrench sizes. Several people have commented that loosening the carb bolts, holding it to the manifold makes putting a new fuel filter in easier. Reduces the fight with fuel line on which way it wants to go. It is very easy to install the fuel filter backwards. The sealed end goes into the carb first. It is possible that there is another fuel filter somewhere in the fuel line. Many P.O. has installed them, especially if there is an electric fuel pump installed.
3. Yes. Does it still have 16.5" rims? Hate to see you spend money on those 16.5" tires, but you can get them.
4. Airbags. Get a block of 4 x 4 with bolts and nuts to replace the air bag if you rupture one. Airbag nuts are 1 1/16" as I remember. Use your favorite version of liquid wrench to soak the nuts before you remove them (if you have to).
5. Check the list. Battery? Brake fluid? Antifreeze?
500 miles sounds like a 2 to 3 day adventure. Where is the coach located? and where is it going?
Look at the "waking up the GMC" article. It is your friend.
People have driven the coachs home, using a marine gas can and feeding the carb directly, completely by-passing the fuel system. Since those tanks are 5 gallons, more or less, that means looking for gas every 40 miles, not fun on the interstate. Have someone follow you in a car, in case you have to run for something.
Many people have done this, the challenges are interesting. Possum Rescue comes to mind. Driver replaced about 5 fuel filters on his road trip.
Get the Black List. Do not leave home without it. Working cell phone. Some form of "come get me" auto club insurance. Green back dollars, or plastic.

Ron,
There ARE drain plugs. One is visible at the lower left on this photo:

They may be very difficult to remove. I did not take mine out when I re-did the fuel lines. I pumped the remaining gas out of the almost empty tanks with my electric fuel pump.
