Ok, here is the dash with all the instruments on it. They are not all the same but will do for now. Eventually, I'll get a set of good instruments and redo the whole thing.

I need to change the label for the washer to wipers. The hole to the right of the washer is where the on/off switch goes for the Henderson wipers.

Now I have to build a support structure to hold the thing in place. There is NOTHING left to mount it to.

Had to remove the gear indicator piece on the bottom of the speedo but I don't think I'll miss it. The GM 'Guess A Gear' wasn't their best work anyway.

That looks good Kerry. I may do something like that, I need to add a few gauges. I would LOVE to do a "Mac Dash", but my winter GMC budget just went for a new 3" exhaust system (not optional).

Well, they're mounted in the dash but not installed in the coach or wired up yet. All except the Tach were previously installed in a really crappy wooden thing that was in a terrible location down to the right of the ashtray without the lights hooked up.

I'll just have to wire them in.

Everything fit but I had to trim the bottom of the speedo and factory tri-cluster in order for the 2" guages to fit below. Also had to remove the gear shift indicator.

I'd like to have a Mac Dash or Digipanel but I'm hemorrhaging money on the coach and need to be reasonable. These gauges will work fine for a while.

Looks great to me Kerry.. May have to do the same thing to mine. Not sure how many of my instruments work..I might just buy the 3-4 gauge unit for now, just to have working instruments

I heard Mac Daddy will be in Dothan. Can't wait to visit with him and his lovely bride. Great folks with great products.
Will also be Digi-Panels at Dothan. My opinion, its a good item to have. Stop by and I will let you see my digi-panel, hooked up and working, if you want, anyone.

Lookin good.  If you'll reset the tach to "4 cyl" and put some rub - off numbers on, you'll have a 4K tach instead of wasting half the dial.  I used the little Sun Pro and it works out nice.  Need to add a "0" so the new numbers are symmetric.

There's room for a couple more, Kerry.

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/4935/010_Dash_2003.jpg

And you'll find that you don't need a big tach. There's a big hole in
the dash now but in the future going with the 4000rpm, 2" version.

Here's what I ended up with. Not sure if I've posted this since you've
joined the list.

Kelvin,

Nice work!

I like the way you've rotated the gauges; I assume that when all is well the needles point straight up?

Thanks, and yes -

When I have time I look at the needles and compare them to the numbers
behind. Sometimes you don't have time to "read" your gauges so a quick
glance says things are in the correct range.

Water Temp and Oil Pressure are right on top so they get glanced at more
often.

Kelvin always does nice work.
I have a 2 1/4 inch tach in the GMC and the vdub. I find that I rarely look at the tach. The vacuum gauge is my main gauge to check, in the GMC. I have a large Dixco tach in my mustang and I do look at it when shifting gears. Bought the tach new in 1970. It has been riding on the column ever since.
Lots of good looking dashes in the GMCs.

Well shoot. Got everything back together and everything works but the speedo. The odometer works so it's something in the guage...gerr. Oh, well it was a few miles off anyway and my GPS is more accurate.

Now I guess my motivation to get new gauges and build a whole new dash just kicked up a notch.

I replaced my plastic oil line with plastic. My vacuum gauge line was too short to reach to the new location, so I got a new plastic kit and ran it. Unfortunately it kinked. Replaced it with copper too.

The engine temp problem is definitely solved. Pulled out all the plumbing and put the original sender in the correct position and then pulled the christmas tree and put the aftermarket gauge in there. Both now come to temp nice and quick.

I'd been fighting a few coolant leaks and knew I still had one...somewhere. Today, I happend to see a drop of water just above the hose clamp on the heater supply at the rear of the manifold. As I watched, another drop formed. A teeny tiny hole was there and under pressure it apparently leaked a good bit. It must have also let the system suck air in easier than pulling it from the overflow tank because once the hose was replaced, it would suck from the overflow tank within minutes of shutting off the engine.

Making progress.

I drove a 1982 Audi for a year or so and when I first started driving it, the speedo worked but the odo didn't. When the temperature was right, I could apply some "percussive maintenance" to the dash with my fist and it would work for a while. Eventually, even a good beating wouldn't persuade it to work, so there is no telling how many miles that Audi had on it when I handed it off.
Just saying it might not take much to jar it loose.

Kerry,
Is the old Temp and Oil pressure gauges still connected? They seem to be registering but obviously the engine is not running as the tacho is on zero.

Peter, in that photo, nothing is wired up...actually sitting on a table.

All the gauges work as desired except the speedometer. I'm hopeful the upcoming trip might jar the speedo back into functionality. Shocked Laughing

Peter,

In this period, and for a long time both ways, GM used what are called "Air Core" instruments. The pointer is balanced between two electro-magnets. Both are powered by ignition, but one goes straight to ground and the other through the sender. This eliminates any need for supply voltage stabilization as was required by both Ford and Mopar instruments (same supplier).

Problem: When power is lost, the indicator will not move regardless of the situation. This plan was not held in high esteem by the general community.

This might be a dumb question.. but gonna ask anyway. Does anyone make a replacement GM style gauge that would replace the oil/temp/gas gauge on the GMC, fit in the hole?
