When should the flasers be used?

How much slower than trafic should they be turned on? [o/o]

How far off the road to turn them off?

Other times?

Well I had to use them for the first time a couple weekends ago. Still
don't know why our coach struggled to make it up any incline but did. We
were on our way back from our Cascaders GMC Rally and at every hill - big
or small the coach would slow to between 25 and 45 mph in 60 or 70mph speed
zones - heavy traffic on I5 going through Seattle, cars would come right up
behind and get locked in due to heavy traffic in all lanes. So I would
turn them on early to warn traffic to change lanes, then after mounting the
hill top and on the downward side once my speed was up to 50 I would turn
them off. Frustrating to say the least.

Slow trucks going uphill usually put them on when they are going about 35 to 40 or less

On the interstates the low speed limit is usually 45 mph so you might want to put them on if you drop below that.

I forgot to say that other times you might want to turn them on is if you can see everyone braking ahead. Often cars cannot see the things ahead that you can, being higher up. This warns those behind you that they better start to slow down.

FMCSA requires flashers on interstates at speeds below 45. Although this pertains to commercial vehicles, it is a good reference.

The laws want you to use the flashers whenever you drop below the minimum
posted speed limit, or are stop[ed on a service shoulder.

$99,000 question-- what was your vacuum when you started loosing speed?  The motor has the *&^%% to go up hills, the ignition should not have troubles unless it's grosly out of time so it's down to fuel or vacuum.  Loose either and the motor she stops going!
