Ok, moving on to my dashboard. I have a Tach, vacuum guage, & temp guage I'm putting into my panel.

My dash mounting plastic piece was in about a jillon pieces so I'm going to have to do something to mount the dash when I reinstall it.

However, I got to looking at things as I took it apart and realized there were no lights behind the labels for the wiper, fuel tank, etc. In looking at the shop manual diagram, I see reference to a fiber optic line.

I THINK I found it. A bulb in a housing (that works with the lights) and a long floppy piece of what looks like woven plastic. I assume this was the fiber optic that was somehow mounted to the back of the labels.

Regardless, it doesn't work and I want some labels lit at night.

Suggestions?

Why not do an aluminum face plate for the finishing touch?

Kerry, what Dwayne said.
I just hope you don't tear that thing up and can't even drive it to Dothan. Leave the piddly stuff til the convention is over. Very Happy

I was once told that the little bulb sockets that clip into the side of a cigarette lighter will clip into the openings behind the lights.

I also believe that someone on the net came up with some LEDs that would work. Perhaps they will reply.

Why not do an aluminum face plate for the finishing touch?...

I don't think an aluminum dash panel would be that good with all the glass in the coach letting sunlight in. Reflections off even a brushed or jeweled aluminum panel would be really annoying.

Thanks for the link to the Novak lights. Ordering some as soon as they get back to me.

This is just a temporary solution. The PO had this really tacky wooden thing with 4 guages in it mounted down below my right knee.

I'm comfortable with the original oil pressure and voltmeter so I'm just going to add a 3" tach (where the old wiper control was on the upper left, and a 2" vacuum gauge in the center between the two originals at the top, and a 2" temp gauge between the gauges down low.

The plastic 'housing' that holds the dash panel up was completely shattered...literally in a couple dozen pieces that had been pop riveted together. The old dash just kind of balanced on top of the steering column. I'll come up with some better mounts and brackets to hold everything together. The rear of the instrument cluster is in perfect shape but the flat area toward the windshield is junk and has been filled with bondo (poorly) and painted.

I just found my camera and will post some photos.

I also rebuilt and repaired my telltale panel. Figured how to repair the circuit board and get the lights working again. I can post details if anyone is interested. I'm assuming it's been done before.

Post details anyway. Your procedure might be "better" than previous processes.

I've got Len Novak's lights and labels. Easy and quick fix. Hardest part is getting it all to sit neatly and the clips back on. Don't lose the clips that hold the labels. Other than that, a great upgrade that is cheap and easy to do.
