I'm researching an article comparing the cost of a GMC to a new class A.
It is my contention that the GMC beats the new coach on a practical and economic level.
Despite the fact that many people spend way too much time and money because they just love it, i believe one could just do the resoration with a checkbook and end up with a much better coach than anything that can be had under 30 feet and under $100,000
I know people are reluctant to talk too much about money but people are generally not reluctant to tell me when i am WRONG so I'll post my guesses for a full restoriation and ya'll can correct me.
paint $10,000
drive train $7,000
brakes and suspension $4,000
RV systems $5,000
Onan (Dometic) $2,000
Interior (shipwrights) $5,000
Glass $3,000
steering, electric, misc $5,000
There, just over $40K to turn a basket case with good skin and no rust into a really great coach.
feel free to email or PM me.
Not everyone lives within driving distance of the Jims, What experiences have you had paying non-GMC people to get work done?
i will not publish actual prices paid by individuals or charged by vendors (unless offered)
thanks

A few personal beliefs:
40k would be the number I'd pick out as a budget to re-do one if I had the means to do it.
That number would assume no murphy factor.
Most don't have that kind of scratch just lying around looking for a 35 yr old motor vehicle to call home. The other reason I think you don't see people flocking to buy an old GMC is few have the patience to ship one off to get it done.
If they are going to whip out a checkbook, they want it now. Plenty do have the time and money - their coaches are documented here. I'm talking about the great unwashed.
Now, if you opened up a GMC dealership stocked with re-done GMCs with a per unit cost of $40k, and if the interior appointments were as up to date and swank as the new stuff, I'd say you could make some coin. But, you would have a hefty investment in facilities and talent. I'm sure the Jim's would chip in that it isn't all roses and champagne.
I see the main competition as the Sprinter-based RV's. They must line the floors of those with 24k tiles. With gas at $4.00, diesel is the new must have even if the actual numbers don't add up to real savings, so you would be fighting that, but it would not be an insurmountable issue.
YMMV

My vision is seeing 50K-60K. Could be done for less or a whole lot more
Your paint number looks respectable
Drivetrain a bit low. I'm figuring 10K. (New engine with FI, tranny, final,)
Front suspension alone is around 5K (1 ton upgrade, shocks,
Rear around 3K
Frame 3K
Tires and wheels 3K
Instrumentation upgrades 3K
Coach upgrades 10K (Appliances and creature comforts)
Update and modernize electrical (new generator, invertors, convertors, charger, power distribution)
Glass 5K, (don't forget those foggy windshields)
5K for Misc looks about right.(will probably balloon to 20K when all is said and done)

Dave,
Why not call Cinnabar and ask the prices? If this is current, I see they have an Avion rear twin bed.

My number might be off (that's why i'm here asking) but I feel I'm right about the value, even if it's closer to $60K.
That sort of money buys a leaky pile of crap at the RV dealership.
I don't want to sell them, i just want to make a case that it's a not a silly idea.

It's going to depend a lot on what work you are willing to do or pay to have someone else to do.
You may be able to pickup a new or rebuilt engine for 4K but it's going to cost another 1 or 2 K to get it installed and running properly. Some things are just too far out of my skillset and I leave that to professionals. I generally budget the same in labor as I do in the parts themselves.
I'm guessing the Cinnabar units are running 80K and up

Not trying to save money. This is a theoretical argument and it's not real money (not mine anyway)
I go to RV shows and I look at the crap and the obscene prices and I think, why would anyone do that?
I think about what that kind of cash would to my Revcon and that's where i would put if i had it.
So from that point of view, a full updating and restoration is the better use of money. I actually want to make that case to some prospective RV buyer in the dim hope that one more TZE will be reborn.

I think we're sharing the same plane of thought. Dream money spends so easily doesn't it?
I seldom get comments about my VW Passat but when I drive my 40 year old Thing, people take notice.
I'm amazed at what kind of money people are dropping for RVs these days. I realize the recession is over (cause the govt says so) but I can't justify spending 100K plus for a rig that simply has no soul.

No doubt in my mind, Mac.
Dave's working for me on a series of articles to promote the GMC as a reasonable financial decision. Unload both barrels, he can take it. Here's some of his work in case you've missed it.
http://www.fullretro.com/articles/Its_HER_Fault/
To be clear, Dave brought me to the GMC community. I'm not known for making rash, unbusinesslike decisions. The GMC is the world's only open-source motorhome. That's why I'm here and have 2 coaches at the Co-op.

That's the point. It's worth $200K for what you get. So if you restore it from end to end it only cost half that.
If you have the cash, the GMC is the better value even if you spend $90k getting everything perfect.
At the end of the day it will be more reliable and economical than the new coach.
So, i need those numbers. What's it cost to professionaly redo all the upholstery?
What are the options if the interior cabinetry is junk?

Dave,
It would depend on how the end user defined "a really great coach."
Frankly cost wise I'd say it's more like $80K. I vaguely remember asking a GMCer that had his GMC restored by Cinnabar and I think
he said it cost him $85K. That was awhile back too.
And as far as being practical I don't think so. Here's what I consider to be a practical motorhome:
http://www.gowinnebago.com/products/2013/view_view_profile/
or
http://www.goitasca.com/products/2013/reyo/floorplans/
However, you wouldn't get to hang around with the neat people that own GMC's! ;-)

Dave, I think you are right on in your thinking - mostly because that
is just what my wife and I did. We went and looked at new and new/
used RVs. 40K for the biggest piece of used junk at a local dealer
was the cheapest we could find without going to private parties.
We then discovered the GMC while looking at Airstreams (we really
didn't want to tow a trailer). Our reasoning was if we could find a
reasonable shape one for $10-20K, even if a major system or 2 needed
replacing we would be way ahead of the game, plus we could
personalize it and fix it up over time.
Well we found our coach and are now in process of joining the
community as newbies who had never heard of these things before. The
help we received from those on this board (Carl S. etc) was
invaluable in locating the right coach and finally purchasing it. and
btw, not only does she have soul, she's also got a great body:)
So yes, you are spot on.

I'm going to disagree, Robert. I was considering the Rialto, then the Sprinter/Freightliner. My next-door neighbor converted one into a coach, in fact. I like 'em. A lot. But show me their brain trust. Show me their Blacklist. That's why I'm here.

Dave,
I think your figures are good IF you're not including labor. Installation of the drivetrain components, for instance, would (could) be considerably more when you add in the labor and incidentals (hardware, gaskets, CV boots, oils and fluids, coolant, hoses, belts, fan clutch.......etc. you get the idea).
Even at double the price, a completely refurbished GMC would be a bargain in the class-A segment.
