I was recently bragging on how sweet my tranny was and I guess I cursed it or something.
Today, while doing my test drive to see if the engine came to temp, I noticed the tranny was shifting harder than it has been and winding longer before it shifts. The longer I drove the worse it got and by the time I got home, it wants to stay in first a good bit past the normal shift point. Also if I let off it would normally shift into second but it is staying in first. If I get going, it eventually shifts into second and then third.
I checked the fluid and it was a pint low but acts the same after adding the fluid.
Is this the dreaded governor gear or something else?
I'm falling into the two steps forward, three steps back dance.

Kerry, check the plastic gear at the end of the governor. It may have stripped a Tooth, or worn several low spots on the teeth. Gear is less than $10.
Most of us carry a spare one in the coach. One of those things which are much easier to get when you don't need it. Post if you need the part number, I'll go outside and look at my spare.

Check the vacuum, a little leak can cause strange effects.

Kerry, sounds like you knocked a vacuum line off when you were changing the
thermostat. Check the one that comes from the modulator to the engine. It
is metal most of the time from the modulator to the upper engine area, then
turns to hose. Easy to do, many have taken this journey before you.

Thanks, those two were my first options. Tom, I have the gear in my spares. I'll check the vacuum first. The engine vacuum shows strong ... it runs around 20 when cruising at 55.

Kerry - sounds like the dreaded "transmission about to fail due to low operating temperature" syndrome. Just kidding. I have no idea what's wrong, but according to urban legend it is not serious.

This sounds like a vacuum problem to the modulator. This can be caused by several things including the diaphragm broken in the modulator. The modulator is located on the passenger side of the trans and it is held in place with one bolt.
1. Verify the hose on the modulator is installed correctly and in good condition.
2. Pull the hose off of the modulator and verify that there is no oil in the hose. If there is oil in the hose this indicates that there is a leak in the diaphragm and that the modulator needs to be replaced.
3. That modulator hose goes to a thin steel pipe which goes up the back of the engine and across the passenger side of the intake manifold. On the manifold end of the pipe there is another hose. Check the condition and installation of that hose.
4. The steel pipe has also been known to get clogged with a bit of carbon or rust. Mine completed plugged up one time and I had to remove the pipe, attach an air hose with 100 PSI to it. Then with the air pressure on it I had to heat the first few inches cherry red with a torch to eventually open the clog.
Shifting pints are primarily controlled by the modulator, but the governor, and kick down switch also get involved. Others have already discussed the governor gear and governor. I doubt that is your problem but some (including Dan G.) have had governor problems cause your failure. With a bad gear the trans usually fails to ever shift out of first and the speedometer (driven by the same gear) stays at zero mph. I guess it is also possible to miss a tooth on the gear and still have it turn but I have never seen or heard of that failure.
As a test to eliminate the kick down switch, I would unplug it and see what happens. The switch is located under the dash on the top of the rod that the pedal is mounted on. Unplugging it will get it out of the picture. If unplugging it eliminates the problem, we can discuss fixing it in another posting.
Good Luck,
Ken B.
