I have noticed the same issue with the engine cover panel I made to replace the missing oem one. It seems to me that when I put the carpet and pad in the seams of the sound pad and carpet could be staggered differently from each other and the hatch seam as well. The other thought I had was to buy two more hatch screws and receivers from Jim k at applied and put one on the middle of each side in addition to the two original ones but those screws and nut clips are spendy.

Kerry, et al,,
There are several likely sources of air leaks into the cockpit; I haven't
reviewed the 77TM1 bulletin because of the sorry photos in it (I've got an
original copy. If I can remember to dig it out tomorrow I'll try post a
better copy.), so some of these may duplicate its comments:
1. The vertical (and angled) joint between the firewall and the outer skin
of the coach
should be sealed -- "Great Stuff" aerosol foam is one method.
2. The horizontal joint between the cockpit floor and the outer skin (the
source of "chipmunk cheeks") should be corrected (drawn tight with one of
the fixes documented elsewhere) and then sealed. Again, Great Stuff can be
used (if used before pulling the joint closed, that fix will be MUCH more
difficult).
3. "D" or "Double D" foam tape (with air pocket inside) can be used to
fabricate a seal for the engine hatch cover -- mine, made from material
found at Home Depot, had performed very well for 10+ years.
4. When re-carpeting the cockpit, consider letting the hatch's carpet
extend 2-3 inches past the hatch opening so that the carpet seam's not
aligned with the hatch opening. My carpet extended all the way up the
angled floorboard before the new dash interfered (it's still a little
beyond the opening but not enough to fit neatly).
5. If the fresh air inlet for the HVAC is not blocked, and the foam seal
on the hot/cold deflector door in the HVAC box is deteriorated, cold
outside air can leak into the A/C ducts.
My cockpit's essentially free of drafts (the best I can tell during the few
times I've accidentally gotten caught out in cold weather). :-)

Bruce, I'd happily pay the postage + the cost of your favorite 12 pack if you find em
Ken, I've stared at the bare floorboard to pedestals numerous times and cannot figure out a simple seam overlap configuration which will not make engine hatch access a p.i.t.a.
Do please direct me to the photos......

Mine has a rubber seal strip around it. Also, in the rerar, the carpet comes all the way down the step, and has Velcro strips to keep it attached. No daft as a result - at least out of the hatch.

On my 74 the carpet is OEM and has Velcro as described. The front of the carpet does not have a joint or seam and I have to roll it up towards the from to get it out of the way when I remove the hatch. There is a rubber seal strip attached to the bottom of the hatch that is now quite flat and will need to be replaced.

I like the look of the gas springs but if anything they will magnify the problem of a leak along the sides as they will be pushing up along that seam when the hatch is down. The boat hatch latches are a good idea and look like they will work but the original screws are easier to place and french into the panel. My issue is engine heat leaking under the side seam when on the freeway cooking me out cause of air pressure bulging the engine cover when at highway cruise. I think seaming the carpet at the seat pedestals and then seaming the sound/heat pad between the carpet and hatch will help tremendously as duct tape has worked til now but it gets a bit slimy from the heat.....

Sully,
Here's still another type of latch:

Also, the 3rd & 4th photos show how my carpet extends outside of the hatch
seam. Not by as far as I'd like (because of the seat belt retractors), but
enough to help seal the hatch.
From your comments about heat leakage when the lid "lifts", I wonder a
couple of things:
1. Does your new cover fit tightly up under the front floor lip?
2. Do you have good air-core bulb seals all around the hatch?

Ken,
1 yes
2 no. No seal at all yet. I will need to machine the hatch more to accept a seal of any kind and have been trying to come up with an idea for the correct material which will stay in place as well as hold up to the heat and vibration. I haven't thought too much about it lately until this thread started. I've been pulling parts off the front clip to get blasted and plated in anticipation of my new motor which is waitn for me at Mr Hupys place.
