James Hupy and I are in the planning stages for a rolling Rally in 2014.
We will roll across to Detroit to take in the Car Museums plus a number of
private collections in the area. Then to South Bend to the Studebaker
Museum.
From there to Chicago to start Route 66.
There must be some of you out there who have done part or all and know of
places we could
camp. Not sure how many will be going with us but have received several
inquiries and thumbs up.
Jim and I are meeting this weekend and will set dates.
I went on Amazon, ordered and received 7 books, 1 map and a set of DVD on
Route 66.
I'll go through them all and post ones I believe best suited for this
journey.
The more I read on it the more excited I get. So you have plenty of time
to get your coach in fine shape to join us. You'll be in for a great food,
fellowship and adventure.
I've talked to many who said it was their Dream to do it, well let's make
that Dream come true.
Stay tuned.

Radiator Springs for sure!
We're planning on it. Not sure where we would join and for us it may be driven by the health of our Daughter-in-law. Her health issues means babysitting for us.
The Auburn Dusenburg Museum just north of Ft. Wayne, In is worth a stop.

Dwayne,
I have a few things for you to think about.
When you are in Detroit, I have a stop with 50A, water, and a possible dump. I can only supply that for maybe two coaches, but I can come up with more power if I get some warning. We are in easy striking range of the Henry Ford Museum.
I can suggest that you plan a stop at the River Queen Casino in St. Louis. Then you are in easy striking range of the Arch.
You probably don't want to start at the actual origin of the Mother Road. That is in Chicago and as you are Canadian, I am assuming that you will not be carrying firearms. The fact that Illinois and Chicago even more so have strict laws that prevents law-abiding people from being armed and all the non-law-abiding people take clear advantage. That would be a good reason to plan to start in Joliet. A nice stop there is the Chicago-Michigan Canal Museum.
We ran Rt66 in 2008 and arranged to be in Albuquerque in time for the Balloon Fiesta.
One of the books you should have ordered is EZ66. That was our primary guide book (of three).

The nearest camping to "The Henry Ford", that I can think of is the Wayne County Fairgrounds. It's about 17 miles away adjacant to I-94 and is near Matt Colie.

I'm heading to California toward the end of July but let me know the dates you choose, If I'm in town, I'll help you where I can and may join you for the local museums and places if that's okay.

Dwayne,
I believe you will find that a lot of old Route 66, in Arizona, is covered up by I-40. I am not familiar with much of that route, having only been on bits and pieces of it, but I do have a couple of suggestions:
In Winslow, there is a wonderful restored hotel called La Posada. It is one of the old (and few surviving) Harvey House Hotels. It is beautiful and has an awesome four star restaurant inside. Definitely worth a stop for lunch or dinner. Also, in Winslow is "Standing on a Corner Park" to commemorate the old Eagles song "Take it Easy". (but not much else)
Just west of Winslow is Meteor Crater and Meteor Crater RV Park. It is a very nice park, and the crater is worth the short detour to see.
If the timing works out better, the KOA in Flagstaff is nice and borders Forest Service land, with easy access to some nice hiking trails.
Further west still, is Williams, AZ with a train from there to the Grand Canyon. Kathy and I plan to go there this July for her "Birthday Trip".
The map shows that you can pick up Historic 66 in Ash Fork and it will take you NW to another section of the Grand Canyon, then circles back down to Kingman. Southwest of Kingman, you will wind over the mountains to Oatman, an old mining town where you will encounter wild burros walking the streets. There are places to eat there, including a burger joint/bar where the inside walls are lined with dollar bills. Oatman also boasts the hotel where Clark Gable and Carole Lombard spent their honeymoon.
That's about the extent of my knowledge of that area. I hope you can do something with it. Have fun planning.

We are currently in California and recently had lunch on the Santa Monica Pier which is the terminus for Route 66. When Margie was growing up, she spent many hours out on the pier and sailing with her Mariner's group. Here we are at the "End of the Trail":
<http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/trip-report/p47372-20130122-141516.html>
Springfield, MO might be a good stop. John T. Woodruff was instrumental in developing the plans for Route 66. My first real job was working at a bank located in the Woodruff building. Perhaps it was fitting that Route 66 passed right in front of the building. It was in Springfield (not sure if it was in the Woodruff building or next door in the Gillioz Theater), that Route 66 was chosen as the name for the transcontinental highway.
We can host several coaches at our place in Battlefield, MO (a suburb of Springfield) and can supply power to two or three and with notice maybe a couple more. If it is not raining we can park any number of GMCs (dry camping) and if it is raining, I suppose we could line up about 10 coaches down our driveway although logistics might prove a challenge for coming and going . If anyone is interested in Civil War stuff, Wilson's Creek Battlefield is around the corner. We are on "Old Wire Rd" one of the original roads in the area with just a few remnants remaining.

Much, if not most, of old US 66 is still driveable in Oklahoma.
Some, maybe 20%, is covered by I-40 but virtually all of 66 from
the Missouri line through Oklahoma City and west to El Reno is
present. From El Reno westward as far as Hydro, the original
alignment can mostly be driven. From Hydro west to the Texas
border, much of old 66 has been overlaid by I-40 out in the open
spaces, but the old route still exists in larger towns.
Oklahoma has renamed much of old US-66 as OK-66 to assist visitors
to locate the old mother road.
There are four KOA Kampgrounds on or very close to the OK and US 66
segments in Oklahoma:
1) Claremore (Will Rogers Home/Museum); on OK-20 3 miles east of 66.
2) Oklahoma City (East); just off I-40 about 15 miles east of OKC.
Lots of attractions in OKC; National Cowboy and Western Heritage
Museum, Softball Hall of Fame, Firefighter Hall of Fame & Museum,
Murrah Bombing Memorial and Museum, Ninety-Nines (women pilots)
Museum, a great zoo, Omniplex Museum, and more.
3) El Reno West; 15 miles west of El Reno at Exit 108 of I-40/OK-66.
4) Clinton/Elk City; Exit 50 of I-40/OK-66. Route 66 museum in Clinton.

Dwayne,
Without checking the map, I don't know the distance from the Studebaker
museum to Auburn, IN, but I strongly urge you to try to visit the Auburn,
Cord, Duesenberg museum there. Where else can you see cars like this?:

SHE even chose the color for our GMC based on a car she saw there on the
way to Topeka Graphics for our paint job. :-)

Palo Doro Canyon State park is just south of Amarillo, TX. The camping is excellent and there are trails available. The scenery is striking. This park is well used and you may need reservations.
I'll second Carl's recommendation for Meteor Crater. We also stayed at a KOA at the western end of Gallup that was quite nice.

I heartily second the motion. Auburn will be on the way to South Bend by
hook or by crook. It is a must see. Heck, you'll even see a Crosley on
display.
Didn't know Elaine picked the color based on an Auburn (or whatever). Those
cars are all tastefully restored.

The prettiest car in the museum is the Cord that was prepped for the New York World's Fair ( hope I remembered that correctly). All of the normally chrome surfaces were copper plated. With the paint, it was truly different. The museum building is where they actually built the cars. Cars downstairs, design engineering upstairs. Art-Deco style.

The exact start is where Lake Shore Drive ramps on to 55. Not too bad of an area til last week there was a big shoot em up into a van right there in the weee hours. I think crime is technically down here but news coverage up. And to those outside we must look pretty bad. You'd have to come down Lake Shore to hit 55 and it's no trucks (except for local access) so not sure on motorhomes.

The PBS TV station in our area has an hour program "Billy Connolly's Route 66" on tonight at 9 PM. Our station often seems to not follow the schedule of other PBS stations, so don't know if it will for you. And I don't what Billy Connolly's credentials are.
But just for your info.

If you need accommodations around South Bend IN, Studebaker Museum, the South Bend East KOA is owned by fellow GMCers Patricia and Thomas Jeter. I'm sure they would be glad to have you. They are wonderful and have a very nice facility. They spend the winters in their GMC and are regular attendees of the GMC Classics winter rallys.
