I want to thank every one that responded, as usual some very good perspectives were presented.

For some GMC content, after about 2 years I am putting the gas tanks back in "Miss Smokey" and doing some camping this summer.

Another question

I am going to walk away from the G8 GT at the dealer, it's too rough.
I am looking at one from a private buyer now.
I spent half hour on the phone with him, he is a divorced 42 year old fire fighter, into specialty vehicles.
Says he is anal about the car, says it is pristine, always garaged, mobile 1 every 3000 miles, says he is selling it to
start a business on the side. He has added a cold air intake, stainless steel exhaust, and a "tuner chip" custom programmed
by a knowledgeable specialty shop in Jacksonville, says he has the car on the 1/8 mile strip on street tires. what I am getting
at is that I know this car has been driven a little harder but well cared for, I don't think I am afraid to buy it. He got it at 15,000
miles it now had 45,000.

What do you all think,
Steve Ferguson are you listening.

Sounds a bit boy racer. I don't like when they reprogram the computer. At least be sure all the stock air box etc is included.

Matter of preference.  When I ran hotrods, I took care of them.  That said, I still wouldn't want to buy one I was selling, unless there was a substantial discount for the flogging its undergone.

Yeah, what Johnny said! I once bought an 80's VW Rabbit GTI (the first generation "classic") from a good friend who I knew did some racing with it. But I also knew the guy wasn't an idiot, and that the car would have had the best possible maintenance (including $6 a quart synthetic oil its entire life). Bought the car with 70K miles, and sold it with 250K+ miles, still running like the proverbial sewing machine, and with the original clutch, no less (though it WAS tired). But drag racing is pretty hard on equipment, particularly if an occasional shift is missed. Racers like to unload cars once they'd done something dumb to them. Or, it could be a situation like my GTI, and everyone lives happily ever after... just be careful and look for the warning signs of a car that's been driven just a little too hard...

A drag strip mile or two just helps the owner find weak parts. Most of the
real car guys like this guy take much better care of their vehicles than
the average grocery chaser. Street tires never hook up well enough to
damage parts IMHO.
It would be good if he has the old chip, if he replaced it, or throws the
programmer in on the deal. The cold air package are seldom better than the
original intake systems and more often than not, play games with the MAF.
If he still has the OEM intake system, make sure you get it Marsh.
Sounds like you found the one you will soon own.
