Dear Sirs, I searched the FAQ before sending in this question. Brake fluid is designated as DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5; and DOT 5.1. As I
understand it DOT 3, DOT 4; and DOT 5.1 are glycol-based and compatible with each other. DOT 5 is silicone based and NOT compatible
with DOT 3, DOT 4; or DOT 5.1. Please advise why the designation of DOT 5.1 was created for brake fluid when it is incompatible with
DOT 5 brake fluid? I believe this causes confusion and could easily result in incompatible brake fluids being mixed with disastrous
results. I would think that the DOT would not want to create confusion and that DOT 6 would have been a better name for DOT 5.1.
Regards, Rob Mueller

I've gotten similar letters from the government before. It seems they try to send out a letter to tell you they received your inquiry. Then they try to answer by giving you links to already published information. Then if really pushed, someone maya actually look and think about your question. Shows why politicians get so good at answering questions without actually saying anything!
Actually, thinking about your question, I think it's a very valid point you've made. Kind of like the oil standards, they now have made things so complicated that even an educated consumer can't be sure of purchasing the required product without a scorecard.

His obvious answer will be:
"We are the gov'ment. We know better than you what is good for you and we will do it however we want. It is not necessary for it to make sense to you."

George,
I got the impression that they send you the links as a pacifier until they address the question you've sent in; we'll see!

I seem to recall that the DOT number is related to the boiling point.
The silicone DOT5 was the first to be in that boiling range.
It was years later that a glycol based in that boiling range was offered for sale so it is designated DOT 5.1
