Rob,
I've thought about that, but discounted it because it seems to me simpler,
less risky, and probably just as effective to do the "approved" mod:
Chamfer the insert at the parting line on the side toward the thrust
face. That effectively creates an "oil hole" from the center-of-insert
oil passage to the thrust face. No drilling of the block necessary for the
same effect.

Ken,
I was quite surprised when I disassembled the Caddy 500 I have her I found the thrust bearing halves were "modified" as per your
note below.
It was obvious to me that the area had been machined.
Below is a link to the photos of that thrust bearing out of that engine. If you look at the edge of the bearing you can see that the
chamfer is rounded.

The guy I bought it from told me it had never been disassembled and from the condition of the engine I believe he was correct.

Rob,
The '72 replacement engine also had that feature -- I don't remember about
the first, '76 engine.
Interestingly, the '72's thrust bearing was VERY poorly installed. The
bearing cap was never seated to the rear properly so that the block's
bearing half bore all of the thrust; the cap's thrust surface was barely
worn. I tried to find the photos (which I sent to Dick Paterson at the
time) but can't find them. And I'm pretty sure that engine had never been
opened too.

Rob,
I've disassembled a couple of Caddy engines and that was the same way on
all the original bearings.
So I copied them on the replacements.

I had a 1961 Cadillac Coupe DeVille with an optional 345 hp 390 cu in V8.
It had never been apart when I rebuilt the engine, The main bearing was
relieved similarly to the ones in Rob's photo. In those years I believe
some hand work went into optional high performance engines. I think back to
the 55 - 57 Eldorado's with dual 4 barrels.
