VW Thing is a bit of a Frankincar. It uses bit and pieces of other VWs. It's essentially a Beetle in battledress although some call it the lovechild of a Beetle and a dumpster. Secret to saving money is to learn what is Thing specific parts (mostly body) and what is borrowed for other cars.

Two hobby ALERT! You may find VW Things as addicting as GMC Motorhomes.

that is tempting. but the wife said that if I get a thing, it can't be a project. already too much project going on with all my other vintage toys that contain engines.

so have to save up big bucks for a thing that does not need alot of work.

Though the PO was using this as his daily driver, I'd say it's a project (and I know your wife would). The floor pans are rusted out and I'd guess that there is going to be some rusting of the rocker panels. This isn't a huge deal with old VWs. I was going to replace them with alum diamond plate.

What is a big deal with Things is the hardtop.

Watching TheSamba for current pricing, I have it priced too low regionally. I've raised the price but will honor the $2750 for GMCnet.

I'm not a big fan of the hardtop. Normally a 2 man operation to put in on or take it off. Hard to store. It's better than the soft top if you're going to expect some sort of snowload though.

With the convertible top, you can put it up or down as weather dictates. You can take the whole soft assembly off (one man op) and replace it with the hard (2 man op) or even a bikini top. I have plenty of friends that have all three.
