Kathy and I are planning a Spring trip to San Antonio, TX. sometime in April or May and would appreciate any info any of you can provide. We are wondering about the temps at that time of year (is May too hot?), info on RV parks, attractions (besides the obvious, the Alamo, River Walk, etc) and any other general information any of you might be willing to share.

Thanks in advance.

That is a good time. We have done it a couple of times during March. So, you will be good. I assume you will take I-10. We got off onto some lesser traveled roads when we got into the heart of Tx.

The plan is to take I-10 to El Paso and then head up to Carlsbad Caverns for a day, then continue on to San Antonio. We are thinking about combining the trip with the WS Rally in Amado, heading for TX the last day, then taking the next week to travel and visit the area.

Its a long lonely road from El Paso to Carlsbad. No gas stations. Loved the peak at the big tall pass. Think it was 6500 ft. elevation.

Sounds like my kind of road. I'll be sure to fill up in El Paso.

Carl,

If you make it as far east as Houston touring the Johnson Space Center is interesting; as would a trip down to Galveston.

I will be up in Humble working on Double Trouble.

I'm sure we would love to visit those places too but I'm afraid they will have to wait until we have more than a week off from work (sorry for the language Twisted Evil )

Thanks anyway.

Carl, if Billie Young sees this thread she can give you any information you want. The hill country north of San Antone is beautiful, in my opinion.

Carl,
We've done that trip a few times and I have to say that we always stop at
Buckhorn lake RV park, exit 501, just ahead of the off ramp for
Kerrville. Fantastic Mexican restaurant in Kerrville (Mamacita's on
Junction Hwy) and that hill country is gorgeous. That is just a stones
throw from Fredricksburg which you have to see at least once. I could
spend two days in the Chester Nimitz museum (Nancy's Father's name is on
the wall in two places). The River Walk in San Antonio is a bit touristy,
but not as much as I expected and it is plastered with restaurants. We
also spent a few nights at the La Hacienda RV park on Lake Travis.
Beautiful place and close to all.

Thanks Steve. That's all good information. We're looking forward to the trip (as we always do)

How was the Bluegrass rally? Did you get as much rain overnight Friday into Saturday as we did in Tucson? Sorry we had to miss it.

May in San Antonio is not too hot for someone from Tucson. You will definitelly feel the humidity Smile

To get to Carlsbad from from El Paso, I would cut across the North side of El Paso on 375 over to 180 to Carlsbad. A little mtn to climb, but much less than the others on 180.

There is a lot to see, do and eat in San Antonio. If you want to spend time more in the Hill Country there is also a lot to see, do and eat. Lost Maples state park is beautiful. And I expect Billie will also mention La Hacienda RV park on Lake Travis west of Austin. The Classics just finished a rally there.

Carl,
What Steve and Dan said about The Hill Country and Nimitz Museum.

But if you want to see some different country and interesting places along the the way- get off of I-10-try this route.

Texas has some beautiful state parks with inexpensive rv camping/hook-ups.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park - 35 miles s/w of Carlsbad via US62/US180- Highest mountain in Texas

Van Horn-65 miles south on SR54. If there at lunch or dinner time try Coach John Madden's favorite Mexican restaurant, Chuy's. RV parks near by.

Balmorhea State Park and Campground 75 miles east on I-10 The worlds largest spring fed swimming pool. Lodge and park built by the CCC in the 30's.

Davis Mountains State Park- 35 miles south on SR17. Indian Lodge inside the park also developed by the CCC.

Fort Davis National Historic Site- adjacent to the State park and campground.

Mac Donald Observatory 11 miles west on SR118.
Home of the HET at one time and for a short while the worlds largest telescope. Easy access and plenty of GMC parking.

Sul Ross State University in Alpine 30 miles south on SR118.
Home of The Museum of the Big Bend.
Pick up US90 in Alpine- Takes you all the way to San Antonio.

Langtry- 110 miles east on US 90- Home of Judge Roy Bean, The Law West of the Pecos.

Seminole Canyon State Historic Park and campground. 20 miles east.
Site of ancient cave dwellings and Indian paintings.

Between Langtry and Seminole Park you cross the Pecos River. The bridge was once the highest in Texas. Good spot for a GMC picture with the bridge and canyon for back ground. Send it to Terry Taylorfor inclusion in next years GMC calendar.

Hard to imagine that this deep canyon and wide river is the same small river that you crossed back near Carlsbad.

Uvalde- 115 miles east on SR90 Nice RV park with large oak trees on the east side of town across the street from Cabella's.
The only place I've ever seen ducks land in trees.

San Antonio- 80 miles. All I know about San Antonio is The Alamo, the River Walk and it is the city where my wife first discovered Dillards.

More than you asked for, but the trip can be as much fun as the destination.

Thanks guys,

Don, that's the route I was looking at to get to Carlsbad. Looks like a good one.

Gene, I just went over your suggestions on a map. WOW! it looks like we could dedicate a month long trip just in that part of the state. We'll have to consider taking that route from Carlsbad to San Antonio. It looks very interesting.

It's great to get this kind of feedback.

Carl,

Here’s a link to the Travel Guide on GMCES which lists an RV Park in San Antonio Helen and I stayed at and enjoyed.

http://www.gmceast.com/travel/travel/campgrounds_la.html

By the way I noticed that there's not a lot of RV Parks listed, we need to add them! I'm just as guilty as I haven't added any since
the ones I sent to Byron originally!

If you have time take the 75 mile detour up to Roswell and visit the UFO Museum: http://www.roswellufomuseum.com/

Helen and I walked through Carlsbad Caverns this past summer, well worth the time.

...and thanks to you too, Rob. I am copying all this info, along with any emails and PMs to Kathy. She is our main trip planner. We are starting to rethink how much time we were planning to spend in San Antonio, after all, how much time do you need to see the River Walk and a few missions? This one may end up being more about the trip than the destination.

Hi Carl - it was years ago we spent time in San Antonio - loved the river
walk, surprised how small the Alamo (I had memories of the movie Featuring
Fess Parker as Davy Crocket and to me as a youngster the place looked so
big.

We then went to Fiesta and at that time I don't recall any rides - only
different themed theaters with wonderful young people performing then an
outdoor laser light show. I googled it and it is now a massive six flags
theme park - but looks like they still have the entertainment. Well at the
time it was very entertaining.

Back in The day, we had our manager's meetings in cities where we had stations, San Antonio being one.  When we met there, Cisneros was Mayor, and came by and spoke to us.  We'd had them in Orlando, Dallas, Ft Lauderdale, and a couple others.  The interesting experience was, in San Antonio, everyone we dealt with gave the impressiont hey were really pleased that we were there.  I think they treated all touristas that way.  When I was out there last summer, they still did.  And, if you travel Southeast of town, stop off at the barbecue joint on Main Street in Karnes City - the ambiance ain't much, but the brisket is to die for.

It was a real mud bog Sat. Most of us moved to higher ground spaces. The
weather drove a lot of folks into the indoor arena and they modified the
schedule to work all the bands through the inside. Wall to wall bluegrass
and all of it was excellent. Only recognized one group from last year.
Had my world famous chili and hot dogs for all on Thurs nite. Pretty good
rally. Only had bonfires two nights, wet wood just wouldn't work.

Do the Mission Trail in San Antonio. This will enhance your knowledge of the Spanish effort to convert the Indians to Christanity. Several of these Missions are still active.
If you want to drive by, and see the largest propeller driven aircraft, drive by Kelly AFB, for the XC-99. Very large cargo plane, based on the B-36 bomber airframe. American tax dollars at work.

I don't believe that the XC-99 is still at the
now-closed Kelly AFB in San Antonio. I believe
that I read that it had been taken apart and its
pieces shipped to the Air Force Museum at Wright-
Patterson AFB near Dayton, OH.

I have not attempted to check its current status,
but am certain that a wealth of info can be found
at google.com or other search sites. There were
only a few runways in the world where the plane
could land and then depart. On one of the sites
that I visited, there was data on how many tons
of cargo that it had moved during its somewhat
short operational lifespan.

I don't remember if it ever received the four
added JET engines that its underpowered B-36
predecessor received to boost its performance.
