So I bought my wife a little fishing boat, something called a "Crosby
Sled", manufactured in the 1960s until the factory burned down. It's
fiberglass and about 14 feet long. I'd like to put an old outboard
motor on it. Ideally, one with "character." :)

Anybody got one to sell before I start prowling pawn shops and boatyards? :)

Robin,

When you say an "old outboard" with "character" how old would that be?

If you're talking about one the same age as the boat it might be a bit difficult to find one that is reliable.

Now, the Truly Suave would get one of the old two cylinder opposed Evinrudes with the handle on the exposed flywheel to spin it off (and break more than one wrist in the process).

Johnny,

I agree!

I reckon Robin has had fun doing so too boot.

However, do you reckon it will be fun if he and / or his Bride are in the boat in the middle of a lake, a big storm blows up and the
outboard won't start? ;-)

Robin,

Do your self a big favor and buy two motors.

Get an antique for show, but leave it at home - Dry, cold and quiet. Do this only if you must have it. Engines of that period were still far from reliable and not very pleasant.

Get a good new motor for Dana to use.
Do not buy on price. Buy on reputation. Find someone that has one of the engines you are looking at and talk to him. Only buy a used engine if the owner is replacing it with an engine by the same maker but with more power.

Until very recently (in my terms), outboard motors were on clamps mostly so they were easy to remove and take to a shop for repair. (An alternative view was that so you loosen the clamps give it a push and be done with it.)

It used to be that used engines and trailers were easy to come by because the boats were plywood and only lasted 15~20 years before they were a bonfire. Now, used boats are easy to come by and used trailers and engines are rare.

To be in that situation would require a cascade failure... LOTS of
things would have to go wrong in sequence (starting with ignoring the
weather forecast) to wind up in such a predicament, and that includes
a couple of backup plans failing (trolling motor dying, losing the
oars, etc).

I told her to sign up for some fishing tournaments and we'll take the GMC. :)

On the up side, it would at least be an intersting memory. :)

Robin,

Dana looks and sounds like a nice lady, why would you want to subject her to dealing with one of those cantankerous things.

As I said, get something that will be dependable.
I've only spent my entire life on the water, but that is just an opinion.

Robin,

Hate to tell you this but I've been there and done that with my Father over 50 odd years ago. Come to think of it I was 12 so that
would have been 1958. Maybe if you buy an outboard made in the sixties it will be better! ;-)

Hmm. Matt raises good points, and his experience is well taken. I am
fortunate to have access to folks with more experience than me, so i
don't have to re-invent the wheel or make ALL the same mistakes. :)

It will be me doing all the driving and messing with the engine and
such, she's never going to go out alone. Ever. Not that she's not
capable, but there's risky-fun and risky-stupid. I try err on the side
of risky-fun and avoid risky-stupid. Coworker is just telling me about
a friend of hers who died last year out on the Rez who was fishing
alone.

Since I didn't grow up with these engines and such, I guess I don't
have an appreciation for how cantankerous the old engines can be.

I do NOT want to spend my New Wheel Fund on a thousand dollar brand
new engine. :)

Here ya go, one of these would be the move:

Note the reersing methodology, which Kiekhafer (Mercury) was still using in the 60s.  A reed valve ringding doesn't really care which way its turning.

Hey, that's a fun site! Just below the Evinrude there's an auction for an
aviation sextant. While not the model I knew, that sure brought back
memories of USAF Aviation Cadets in '58/'59: As navigation students, we
had to use the darned things -- hated 'em. Those similar to the one shown
were hung from a hook at the apex of a plexiglas dome in the top of the
airplane (T-29 for us). The operator looks into an eyepiece to see a
bubble level, a compass, an elevation indication, and a star. That star is
itself enough of a problem -- one must know which one to try to find, by
memorizing constellations and calculating (using large tomes of
calculateddata) locations, and then center it in the
graticle seen through the eyepiece. All while standing in an always-moving
aircraft and maintaining the bubble level for the 60 seconds or so
necessary to obtain a reasonably accurate elevation of the star. Using
that elevation and those from at least two other stars, one can reportedly
determine a geographic location. Supposedly.

I got close enough in usual celestial navigation, but there's another
method, known as "Grid Line" that stumped me. Because of the complexity of
the theory, that was the only navigational method for which the ground
school course was long enough to require both mid-term and final
examinations. I scored 100% on both of those, a first for either of them.
And then flunked the flight test! :-( They passed me on the second try
(notice I don't claim to have done any better ). Fortunately, I never had
to navigate since I went directly in to radar interceptor fighters. :-)

Do yourself and wife a BIG favor. Bite the bullet and buy
a new, small (6 - 9 hp) four-stroke motor. Easy start, sips
gas, reliable, etc.

Don't forget to always wear Personal Flotation Devices
(PFDs) when boating, particularly in small boats! Most of
the boating fatalities occur in fishing/hunting boats!

Well, she'll have to just get by with a little electric trolling motor
for now then... at least there's plenty of fishing holes located not
far from boat ramps. A modern 8 or 9 HP Mercury looks like it costs a
couple of grand.

Stay with the 60's idea. Those new ones are non-servicable and are disposable.Absolutely nothing is repaired anymore.Just throw it away and spend $ and get new under warrenty .I am really sick of folks saying new is dependable.Get something that wont let you down and if it does it can be repaired in the field!

I have learned from my mistakes and just being honest and trying to help!!!

My Dad had a 16' aluminum boat with a 25hp Evinrude. I was 9-10 or so and primarily was ballast in the front so Dad could see over the bow.

By the time I was a very skinny 12, I could start it....almost always with a single pull. The only time we got stranded was when we hit a log and snapped the shear pin and had no spare.

I agree with new stuff being non repairable by humans without special equipment. I won't even think about doing anything but oil changes and brake jobs on our new vehicles. Life is too short to get all pissed off trying to work on something that was DESIGNED to require special tools so the dealerships could make up for the margin they used to get on the sales price.

When I lived in Tampa, my next door neighbor had an old Mercury Kiekhaefer outboard (I think it was probably late 1950's vintage, probably in the 5-10hp range as I recall). He fiddled with the thing for weeks without getting it to run, and finally gave up and sold it to me for $50. He wasn't a happy camper when I threw a new spark plug in it and it fired off on the first pull and just about emptied the 40 gallon barrel of water I had it sitting in... (moral of the story - if a two stroke motor won't start, change the plug first). I ended up selling it because it was too big to go on my canoe and too small to do anything else with at the time.

Robin,
I would suggest that before you do anything else that you and your wife sign up for a "Safe boating Course". These are offered free of charge by the US Power Squadron or the Coast Guard Auxiliary. You will meet many experienced boaters, find out just how much you didn't know about boating, and may get some assistance in powering your little craft. My bride grew up in central Mississippi so I have a pretty good feel for the level of boating knowledge common to the area :-)

Please do this,
