I have developed a power steering leak somewhere. I changed the oil and checked the PS fluid and the reservoir was almost empty. I can see to the bottom of housing(that's low).

The fluid is reddish. The Prestone PS fluid I bought was clear/yellowish (I have not filled it up yet). At the parts store I also saw where they have a "stop leak" power steering additive. Another parts guy indicated that some older vehicles used transmission fluid in the PS reservoir. I did not see any reference in the manual other that GM 10500017 for fluid replacement.

What would be your choice of power steering fluid?

The best that I've had experience with to stop a PS leak is "Shepherd P/S fluid stop leak . I bought mine off EBay. Not cheap buy if used as directed worked great. Other may have better advise.
Just my 2 cents ! Bcon

The GM maint manual supplement says GM PS fluid Part 1050017 or equiv for 77-78. I have box roughness with Dexron. You should be able to find Prestone ir house brands of PS fluid. If a hose is bad replace it.

The earlier manual says same and says use Dexron II only if PS fluid 1050017 is not available.

Maybe thats why my wipers quit working after i changed my P/S fluid to a lighter weight fluid to keep it cooler.

I have also heard that "Bar's" PS stop leak fluid or Lucas? are also good for PS leaks. Any thoughts on these?

As far as Dextron II vs Transmission fluid used in the PS -do you have a preference?

Due to the age of the MH 36 years and the use of the PS for the windshield wipers, did not know if that made a difference.

I go with Dexron in the TH425 and Power Steering fluid in the steering. Stop leak might work on a shaft seal, but if a rubber hose is failing you are asking for a delayed major fail with stop leak. Also given the wiper system and filter screen, I wouldn't put stop leak in mine.

Stop leak will only work on shaft seals. I have used it many times for seal leaks. You need very little. If it doesn't work the first time, it will never work. If it works, I have found that it usually will work for a long time. If you don't have a seal leak, don't bother. Just my experience...
