The discussion in an earlier post about toads and trailers, has got me thinking about towing my 4wd 5000lb. suburban. I do have an addon brake system and it can be towed with all 4 down with the transfer in neutral and I do have a massive tran cooler. I know it would kill mileage and harder on the tranny but still beats my wife following in it. In the earlier post the gentleman said he had towed a trailer with 19000lb gross weight. I wonder was that the GMC and trailer together or the trailer only? Any comments good or bad on towing above 3K.

I would like to see pictures of that! I do not have experience towing a suburban, but I would think that the weight would be one thing, but just the size, and foot print of a suburban would make controlling the rig tough. when the suburban decides it wants to turn to the left, there is alot of footprint, weight there to take the gmc with it.
I have towed plenty of suburbans loaded up on trailers, and they are a hard tow when all 4 wheels are not on the ground.

Skip, I towed my 4600 pound 2012 Jeep Overland about 30 miles with my GMC last year. I have towed it or similar sized vehicles about 100,000 miles over the last 13 years with a 37' Winnie, a 36 Winnie pusher or our current 40 Beaver, so i'm no rookie to towing a toad. With the GMC it was unnerving because the towed car tends to push the back of the GMC around. If I had to, I'd do it again, but hold my speed to about 50. I have towed a trailer that weighed about 3500 with the GMC and that seemed to stabilize the steering and seemed to make it easier to control. Go figure!

Billy - please elaborate. I've heard of using a 4WD Tracker to push a GMC on wet grass or similar situations. But, several miles??

2003 Chevy Tracker, standard transmission, 2 wheel drive.
Several years ago, in a GMC new to us, we stalled traveling uphill a few
miles south of our home as we headed out for a ~300 mile trip to the coast.
Couldn't get it to pump fuel. We were on the side of the road on 2" loose
rock base. Father in law drove, I pushed it uphill, from a standing stop on
those rocks. After about a mile we used a tee in the road to make a U turn
and head back home.
Come to find out, we were out of fuel. It was new to us and we weren't
accustomed to the gauge, which said we had plenty. Put fuel in, fired right
up, and we went on with our trip successfully.
Last summer while returning from the GMC Classics rally at Weatherford,
Texas, we lost power about 20 miles from home. Again, no fuel. This was in
Sweep Pea and I knew we had plenty aboard. I had my toolbox in the Tracker
but we were in somewhat of a hurry to get home. Besides, it was nearly
100*. Debbie, my 5'2" wife, drove and I pushed her all the way home
including a hard right and then a left turn. We maintained 60 mph except on
the slightest hills. I think that passersby thought I was in the doghouse!
:-)
I was a little apprehensive about the transmission, but had no trouble on
the next 600 mile trip.
The problem was that one of the short (2") pieces of rubber hose that I'd
used to connect the electric, in-tank fuel pump to the inlet tube had rotted
in two. It was the hose that came with the pump for that purpose! The
front pump simply pushed fuel to the rear tank. The rear pump just
circulated the fuel.
I think a couple of check valves might be in order. haha or maybe the
correct hose ...

That's true Billy. But I think she would probably prefer to be driving the Tracker. That or have me call someone to come help and just wait till they got there.

We found that the rear of the GMC can get squerly when towing heavier toweds
.
We notice it more when the unit is a front wheel drive as the toe in/out
is different and when not under power, it will be different enough to make
difference as suspension parts never tight and precise.
When I tow our Oldsmobile mini van which is around 4,000 lbs. and when we
tow it to conventions, it can easily scale over 6,000 lbs.
I have seen improvement by toeing it in 1/16 to 3/32 helped a lot.
Also when we went with the Qudra Bag rear suspension system, it made lit of
difference.
Others that we set up for towing say vast improvement with the Q Bag
suspension system, as the spring rate is what the Q Bag is about

Or both the correct submersible hose AND check valves. That the hose that comes with a pump may not be the correct hose for fuel submersion is a good bit of information. If I remember correctly that hose is less than two years old.
