Hi,
A few weeks ago I saw a discussion about oil filters for Olds 455 engines. It seemed that the general consensus was that WIX was the way to go. K&N Filters are a high quality alternative you might want to consider.

K&N (Racing) Filters used to be a sponsor of some of the motorcycle races I attended and I tried their oil filters on my motorcycles. I have used the oil filters on my motorcycles, my Dodge Truck and my Subaru WRX (turbo). They are very high quality, work very well in high heat engines, and - the best thing in my mind - they have a wrench off design that allows one to put a socket on the end to remove the filter.

I am now going to use the K&N HP-2003 size filter for my 1973 GMC with a 455 engine and expect to have very good luck with it. The filters aren't cheap but if you run synthetic oil (as I do), you will probably find the oil filters worth it (especially the wrench off design).

I hope you find this information useful =)

I am discouraged that they do not publish any information relating to the filter performance. Wix does and Hastings used to, but seems to have dropped it.

There has been considerable discussion of AIR filters
on a motocycle group in which I participate. Various
studies have been published and the consensus is that
K&N filters serve only to enrich the sellers. Wix and
OEM filters lead the lists! Fram resides near the
bottom of the list!

I would suspect that K&N's oil filters have comparable
quality!

I know there is no comparison between air and oil filters, but I have been running K&N air filters on my Jeeps (one for over 35 years and the other for over 10 years) and operate them in the severest of conditions. The inside of the air cleaner has always remained dirt free. This presupposes that they are oiled properly and sealed to the carb/throttle body properly (I use grease for this).

When I last checked in 2011, Champion made both K&N and Mobil 1 oil filters. The welded nut on the K&N is convenient -- but I buy whichever one is available since they, in all other respects, appear to be the same. Both have high filtration specs -- 10 microns.
