While my son took my 74 Canyonland to emissions the right front wheel started smoking (during the testing) and he said fluid came out. The boot is cracked and he said we need a right axel. Any advice would be appreciated.

Sounds more like a blown piston in the caliper to me.

Cracked boot does not necessarily mean you need a new axle. They can be cleaned repacked and rebooted if tolerences are ok. You may have more than one issue and leaking "fluid" might be anything up front. It will have to be examined.

Joyce,
If the CV boot is bad then you need to replace the boot assembly on the axle not necessary the axle. You can get them ( the boots kits ) at NAPA (CVB 6861064) and most auto parts stores. Jim K has them also http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/660 . Tell them you need a boot kit for a 1975 toranado. You also could have a bad brake line that has collapsed causing the caliper not to release or a bad brake caliper.

DO NOT PURCHASE NEW CV JOINTS!!! When I installed the 1ton front end I thought "new" would be much better than used rebuilt. Of course its just a swap of the shaft in the middle,,,right,,,,!!! Wrong. The "new" are a complete diffrent size axle(Dia. is diffrent). So new cv joint assemblys for 1ton's won't work by swapping the inner axle(diffrent length for the GMC,of course).Probably chinese. Now about the Hubler conversion,,,,I pieced mine together instead of signing the big check to Jim K. Very big mistake. in the end I hade spent way to many hours chasing parts,,,,cleaning,,,sandblasting,,,painting. Parts that didn't fit(axles). etc. I saved about 500 bucks. Not worth it. Jim K. was a big help and I still purchased alot of parts from him. But it wasn't worth it. Do I like the conversion, ya its great. Braking is wonderfull. When Jim made the demo at Amana(1st time) and held up the bearings next to each other,,,that convinced me!!! The total width of the Toro/GMC bearing stack assembly is 1.6 inches. Thats outside to outside!! Now think about the load on the outside wheel bearing,,,turning, braking and the hit a chuckhole! Hope I've helped,,,,,,PL
