I need to put a buzz box in a coach to check the coach electrics out. The Todd 45 amp converter in it was shorted. It is a 1974 26'. I have a 50 amp that puts out 15.2 volts on the bench. Is this to much? I also have a 30 amp out of my 23' that I was using. Would the 30 amp be ok to use?

Depending the type, the 15.2 open circuit shouldn't hurt anything. For testing, it won't hurt anything. It will drop when it's loaded, how much depends on the circuit used.

15 volts open circuit for testing won't hurt anything. It will come down under load. My 23' coach has a battery disconnect toggle supplied by the upfitter. Turning the battery off merely brightens the lights very slightly. Using the new (switching) supply, the battery makes no difference, due to the much better regulation in the newer box.

Buzzboxes are always going to put out more than 12v. You should allways have
a 12v battery connected to act as a buffer to drop the voltage down to the
12.5/13-4 range. Don't just use the buzzbox by itself to trouble shoot or
you could "overvoltage" some of your stuff and end up with more problems
than you started with.

Johnny, I would suggest that you experiment on your own stuff and always
give advice that err's on the side of caution. You have no idea what buzzbox
he is going to use as he did not mention a name so I'm not sure where you
are coming from here. The Todd was shorted out. Unless I missed something he
did not give a name or a description of the one he is planning to use. You
also have no idea if he has voltage sensitive equipment in the coach.

I went to the barn to get specs off the converts. All came out of 75 model GMCs.
Newmark model DCV50 F 50 amp.
Progresssive Dynamics model PD708 30 amp
B-W Manufactures model 3230UL 30 amp
All are buzz boxes. The Newmark looks very clean. Only info I could find says the Newmark model F is automatic and the output says 12v nominal. The coach has 2 new matched 12v deep cycle house batteries so I`m thinkin the 50.
