I had a friend in high school that was fling on a part he was turning on his Dad's lathe down in their basement. The file caught or
hit the chuck which drove the tang through his palm. He had the presence of mind NOT to pull it out until he had gotten to the
bathroom where he could bandage it properly. Unfortunately when he pulled it out he passed out and fell into the bath tub! His Mom
found him there a couple of hours later and he was lucky as the tang hadn't hit any large blood vessels and kinda sealed up so he
had minimal blood loss.
This taught me never to use a file (or any other tool) that could cause that kind of injury.

I wonder how making handles out of instamorph would work out? Hard, fairly
tough plastic, dunk it in water that is at least 140 degrees Fahrenheit,
and form it with your fingers. My kids love it. $10 for a 6oz bag on
amazon. When it gets loose, dunk it again, and reform it (it can pick up
dirt).

GREAT IDEA !!!:
Everyone should know that even if that file tang does not penetrate the hand, it can do a lot of nerve damage just by pressuring that part of the hand. This damage will happen even without you knowing right away. That Tang lines up with the nerve bundle going into the hand, very close to the carpal tunnel. Way more hands have been damaged by this nerve damage than by actual penetration. The 1/8 square inch can put out a whole lot of pressure on the nerve bundle just in use.
NOBODY SHOULD EVER USE A FILE WITHOUT A HANDLE OF SOME SORT.
If you cannot find anything else as a handle, use Duct tape and make a makeshift handle by taping multiple layers over the tang. Make it 3/4 inch thick or more.

It is to me like zipping yourself in your zipper (which I've done) or sticking a drill in your thumb (which stupidity I've also doner. I have to reverse it Right Now, before the shock wears off. The longer I wait, the more it hurts. Blood spots on the floor? Ho hum./

Just spend the big bucks and buy handles for your files. That's what
they're made for. If you are careless enough to use a file with no handle,
palm the file so the sharp edge of the tang protrudes past your palm. This
is the way I learned to use a file when I was an apprentice tool and die
maker.

Been there...done that. Problem is, at least for me, is that the handles never fit right, won't stay on, etc. Even spent the money on some of the high tech plastic insert models...same same.
The golf ball makes a SUPERIOR file handle imo. The fact that they are basically free is just lagniappe (a little something extra).

The first summer I worked at the Gin Shop in my home town (It was the local industry, Continental Gin Co) I was set helping Mr Womble. He was an old line machinist/mechanic from wa-a-ay back. He wouldn't allow files without handles. He also would correct you if you drew the file backwards across the work as opposed to lifting it to get ready for another stroke. "All you're doing is dulling the file, boy!"

My Dad was a sheet metal layout man / boilermaker who learned the trade as an apprentice in Germany. He told me the first job "Der
Meister" gave him was to make a cube out of a hunk of cast iron. He gave him a worn out file to do it. Dad filed on it until he felt
it was a cube. "Der Meister" checked it with a micrometer and told him it was high here, there, etc. He filed on it some more. Same
result. Finally after three months it was OK. Lesson in patience.
Dad "corrected" me too with a smack upside the head! :-)
