We bought our Glacier 230 in November 2002. Many mechanical and
interior upgrades since then but we never found the right time or
necessary money to fix the toasty blue paint. I would have tried to
buff it out but it truly was gone.
We've been doing the interior in greens and grays. Bryon Songer took my
paint scheme ideas and whipped up one of his renditions a while back
which actually made me more determined to get this done. Pure luck put
me in touch with a painter who was willing to do the job for a price and
schedule that I could live with. The price stayed the same but as with
all paint-shop plans, the schedule slipped a month or so. Just got it
back before Christmas and mostly back together by Dec 27th, when it
needed to make a trip north to serve as our room for a big family
gathering at my Sister's.
Initial pics are here.

I'll be adding "build pics" later. Some editing to do from the 200 pics
I took. :^)
Happy New Year!

WOW Kelvin! Looks great -- and I really like the photo where you can see the opposite side reflected in the building windows behind.
Will you install an awning? Sure looks smooth without and without a roof ac.
Thanks for sharing -- and Congratulations.

First off, I love the paint job! (I have to get that in now as it might be missed in the following.
It almost looks like there is a Roman number 2 on the side. Now that is an idea, because we haven't named our coaches, we call them "one", "two" and "three". But due to window placement, your "II" would look funny on the side of a rear bath coach like my number 2 coach... oh well!
Anyway about the old color you made this statement:
Kelvin Dietz wrote on Mon, 31 December 2012 23:48 |

One thing that I have noticed already is that these colors don't attract attention like the Sky Blue did. I'd catch people looking at it as they drove by on the freeway. Not much anymore. Joe Public doesn't notice as much but I like it better and the GMC crowd will appreciate it. Jane Public did chat me up while getting fuel today. Said she liked my RV and what was it? Going to have to get some GMC letters on the front at some point.
|
I had just read an article about color effecting classic car values. If you substitute the proper terms it the proper places it applies fairly well to our GMC's.
Quote: | .... In today's world of cars offering a selection of 5 or 6 varying hues of grayed out colors, the old cars painted in unusual period colors really stand out and are even more unique. There have been black, white, and red cars for many years, and they are all great colors for vintage cars. But before you restore your old car and change the color to something more common—more mainstream—consider why you have an old car in the first place. Is it because it isn't common? Are you making a statement to society by driving something that isn't the norm? Are you demonstrating your dislike of new cars that all seem to look alike? Whatever reason you may have for owning an old car, chances are you like it all the more because you have found something special about that particular car that makes it unique in your eyes. ...
... Just as old cars are representative of the time they were made, so are the colors they came in. The vintage car world would be boring if all we ever had to look at were red, black, or white cars. So, keep that in mind next time you come across a vintage car wearing paint in Rosewood Firemist, Mandarin Orange, Terra Cotta Firemist, Emberglo Metallic, Chestnut Metallic, Antique Bronze, Beachwood Brown, Sultana Turquoise, Silver Sand, Persian Sand, Dark Orchid Metallic, Black Plum Metallic, Lime Gold Metallic, Anti-Establishmint, or Moby Grape.

So basicly, if you paint your "vintage" rig in modern colors, it might look more modern but it will not "pop" out of a crowd of modern rigs on the highway.
Even if it does look MUCH nicer.

Thanks. Inspiration came from various places.

Those are "BRE Stripes". Brock Racing Enterprises ran Datsun 510s in
the 2.5 Trans-Am series in the early 70s. Part of the reason 510s were
so popular is they dominated in '71 and '72.
http://datsun510.com/photopost/data/3018/BRE_Poster_Framed.jpg
Many 510 guys put variations of the stripes on their cars but I think
it's a little passe. Works on a GMC, though. :^)

Which is why my Datsun won't be painted to match the coach. It would
just look like an oddly shaped Outback.

If the Sky Blue could have been saved I would have. Didn't feel the
need to keep the GMC looking vintage, however. I think the fact that it
can look so modern 40 years later is a good reason to paint it. Will be
fun telling people how old it is.

I had a '68 510 wagon (Live axle), it was an excellent little car. The sedan with its IRS wes screamer - the little engine has a lot of potential.

Kelvin,
I agree.
I think the photos you've posted don't really show the color as well. I'm
ready to see some of the others in you "build" series. But, it looks sharp
every time I look at it. You're idea was spot on. Doing the illustration
was fun.
