There are two main schools of thought for holding tank maintenance. Both are correct but they are totally different and fit different uses of your RV. I'll call them the "chamber pot" and the "septic tank" schools. While POSSIBLE to switch back and forth, it could be a PITA, as you'll need to ensure all the chemicals are clear before switching to the "septic tank" method.
The article you linked is of the the "chamber pot" school and I think this method would work best for RV's that see occasional use. (Sadly most of us...) The first paragraph pretty much sums it up:

OBTW: I understand Phred has passed away and his website might not be around much longer... get the info while you can, while some might be dated, most is good to think about:

Mike,
An RV tank as a septic tank is an interesting concept.
When Helen and I tour we can go about a week in between dumps. Just how much will the "crap" in the 40 gallon holding tank
biodegrade?
We only use biodegradable chemicals in the tank.

I downloaded them this morning after skimming a few. Regarding permissions, Phred wrote in the 'notes' section this:

Given what he wrote, this reads pretty much that he doesn't care if they get reposted. I'd think it would be a honorarium to his contributions if he was given credit on the source page.
The files are not that large but the current upload in the photo album does not allow html files. Converting to word wouldn't be that difficult but time consuming.
