Greetings and Happy Holidays,

I have recently had a replacement 6K Onan generator, circa 1978, installed in my 78 Royale and noticed a problem. In the 120v receptacle next to the entrance door to my coach I have plugged in a meter to show the amount of AC volts I have being supplied to the motorhome. I originally purchased it to check out how many AC volts are being supplied when hooked up to shore power. The problem I have is when the generator is running the meter is pinned out of the high range of the meter. When I plug into the shore power it registers within the acceptable parameters of the meter. Is there a regulator on the Onan that might not be working? I don’t want to overload and burn up anything.

Sounds like your generator is running to fast. There is an adjustment to the spring on the governor arm on the top of the generator.

Note that the voltage and frequency are linked, so you also have higher than 60 cycles. Yes, you can burn some stuff up.

Be sure and adjust it under load. It will normally run slightly high when lightly loaded.

Ah, maybe you need to make sure that your multimeter is set on AC and on
the 400 volt scale if you have switches. Some have 200 volt scales on AC as
well, and that should work also. Check each leg of your output leads to
ground with the black on the ground and the red on each of the leads one at
a time. If the voltage is over 130 volts AC, no load on the generator, your
rpms are too fast. There is a threaded rod near a fairly large spring on
the governor linkage. Loosen the jamnut which will have the effect of
lowering the rpms. When you get it to about 124 or 125 Volts no load, then
try it under load, It should hold a steady 120 Volts under load if all is
well.

Actually the Onan factory manual says to adjust it unloaded.

I turn off every thing inside the motorhome and adjust the motor speed so that the voltage measures 128 volts.

If the carb high speed jet is adjusted properly you can then load it up and will still stay at close to 118-120 with an air conditioner, a water heater and a microwave all running.
