The title character of the LuAnn comic strip has
an Aussie boyfriend (Quill) via Internet. Today's
shows her family opening up Quill's gift of a jar
of Vegemite. LuAnn's brother and father like it,
mom seems to like it, and LuAnn retches and spits
it out. LuAnn (on Internet with boyfriend) claims
to have liked it and Quill calls her "liar."

I remember Rob Mueller and some others had commented
on the stuff a month or so back. I'm going to send
a copy of the strip to Rob.

While I haven't had the "pleasure" myself, I understand that it needs to be spread very THIN. (Just like most of us are OK with a small amount on yellow mustard... a half inch will gag almost all of us!)

I have seen vids of an American guy trying it by the tablespoon... and barfing. "Stupid Americans"

I think the proper spread depth of Vegemite is similar to the proper
amount of Vermouth in an extra dry Martini. Hold the knife in front of
you, above the bread, and quietly whisper "Vegemite". Then wipe the knife
on the bread. Linda says that's too thick. Whisper "Vegemite", then
remove the bread from the breadbox and the knife from the drawer. Maybe,
just think"Vegemite", then do the rest.

Kay and I took a jar of vegemite to the Pueblo convention and Rob instructed the takers on how much should be spread on toast I guess we should have demonstrated the spread but as we were staying in a motel which provided a nice cooked breakfast we never got to the rally for a report from the vegemite consumers. I believe pretty much every one who tried it did not have an appreciation for it and again it was spread too thick (like jam). I don't know what happened to the left over jar of vegemite.
We redeemed ourselves at the Shawnee convention we brought some Tim Tams (another Aussie product a chocolate coated cookie) for those (and others) who had previously tried the vegemite to gauge their reaction to this product and we got the big thumbs up of approval.
Note! I would have vegemite on toast or muffin almost every morning for breakfast

Peter,

I've brought some to other conventions and the reaction is always the same:

YECCH! How can you eat that stuff!

Most Yanks (me included) spread as you noted below or peanut butter. That's what I did the first time I tasted and I retched!

I reckon it is an acquired taste (like Scotch whiskey) and knowing to spread it THIN!!!

My two favorite Vegemite "sandwiches:"

A Sao biscuit, a bit of butter, a thin smear of Vegemite, and a piece of cheddar cheese on top, YUM!

An English muffin, a bit of melted butter, and a thin smear of Vegemite, YUM YUM!

Regards,
Rob M.

If the stuff is so yucky, why does ANYBODY eat it?

Or is it some secret rite akin to the Swenskis and
Norskis consuming that nasty lutefisk? Do you/they
eat it to prove you/they are tough?

Vegemite is to Aussie cuisine as poi is to Hawai'ian cuisine.  Both are better off without.

Funny how regional differences in cuisine affect people: I've recently had
two GMC visitors REFUSE to eat fried corn bread! Can you believe that?
And here I often have it for dessert after a meal blessed with it. :-)

Some folks don't even like GRITS! Will wonders never cease!

The funniest thing I noticed during the two years I lived in Australia was the beer.

First off, the Aussies are holding out on us Yanks... they keep all the good stuff for themselves! There are so many truly great beers in Oz that it's hard to even pick one out at the package store. But the entire time I lived in Oz, I think I saw a grand total of one local guy drinking a Fosters.

But go into a yuppy bar in Sydney, and what are all the hipsters drinking? Budweiser.

It's a strange, strange world we live in...

I make yankee visitors repeat "Grits are groceries!" three times before they're allowed any breakfast - with grits.   Being something of a grits snob, I get mine from Logan Turnpike Mill up towards Dahlonega.  They've a website and they ship.  And for those who haven't experienced, get the white, not the yellow.  The yellow has a much stronger flavor, not necessarily for Yankees.   And face it, they're so damn cheap, even at tourist prices with shipping, a pound or two aren't expensive.  And, when the Health Dept isn't looking and there's no one in her store when we stop off, the nice lady lets the BWD come in with us and touch noses with her dog.

One of my favorite "grit" stories

"Vinny Gambini: How could it take you five minutes to cook your grits
when it takes the entire grit-eating world 20 minutes?
Mr. Tipton: Um... I'm a fast cook, I guess.
Vinny Gambini: [across beside the jury] What? I'm sorry I was over
there. Did you just say you were a fast cook? Are we to believe that
boiling water soaks into a grit faster in your kitchen than any place
on the face of the earth?
Mr. Tipton: I don't know.
Vinny Gambini: Perhaps the laws of physics cease to exist on your
stove. Were these magic grits? Did you buy them from the same guy who
sold Jack his beanstalk beans? "

I wasn't brave enough to try the vegemite at Pueblo, but Peter fixed us up with some Tim Tams, at Shawnee, and THEY sure were good! Very Happy

Johnny,

And an Aussie could say Southern cuisine is better off without GRITS! ;-)

Tell you what, I'll bring some Vegemite and you bring some Grits to the GMCMI Convention in Dothan, I'll try the grits if you'll try
the Vegemite. I'll even try the yeller ones!

I'll bet you'll like it if I prepare a piece of toast with Vegemite on it.

PS - I agree 100% about instant coffee!

I make yankee visitors repeat "Grits are groceries!" three times before they're allowed any breakfast - with grits.   Being
something of a grits snob, I get mine from Logan Turnpike Mill up towards Dahlonega.  They've a website and they ship.  And for
those who haven't experienced, get the white, not the yellow.  The yellow has a much stronger flavor, not necessarily for Yankees.
And face it, they're so damn cheap, even at tourist prices with shipping, a pound or two aren't expensive.  And, when the Health
Dept isn't looking and there's no one in her store when we stop off, the nice lady lets the BWD come in with us and touch noses with
her dog.

n.b. Do NOT try 'instant grits'.  'Instant Grits' are to grits as instant coffee is to coffee.  Both are abominations before the
Lord.  jb

Vegemite is to Aussie cuisine as poi is to Hawai'ian cuisine. Both are better off without.

Ken,

Those visitors didn't know what they were missin'!

My Dad had the food concession at the Holland America Line in Hoboken and my FAVORITE breakfast was a corn muffin. They were baked
not fried but still de-lic-ous!

OK, how about you bring some fried corn bread, Johnny can bring the grits, and if Roger brings some catfish we can have a real
Southern meal!

BTW some boiled peanuts would be good too!

Funny how regional differences in cuisine affect people: I've recently had
two GMC visitors REFUSE to eat fried corn bread! Can you believe that?
And here I often have it for dessert after a meal blessed with it. :-)

Some folks don't even like GRITS! Will wonders never cease!

Ken H.
