In our family we always used one day to spend with the in law side of the family and the other to spend with my side of the family. it always took a lot of scheduling with sisters and brothers, but it would work out nicely. In most cases it was my side of the family to use boxing day for Christmas. The day used to be a cherished holiday for everyone because retail hours restrictions were in place and stores remained closed. ( I used to work in the retail industry when I went to school). The crazyness only started after boxing day.
About 30 years ago the retail opening bours restrictions were lifted and the industry took advantage of the people not working in trying to sell off their goods big time on boxing day. ( a new tradition started by merchandizers) ( Not a real big change because they used to do it in the week before new year anyway.
In the last few years our retainers are also trying to establish Black Friday traditions like the US to increase sales as well. Only it's just an other day here. Not Thanksgiving.
I love boxing day because it gives us a chance to quietly spend time at home and catch up after the Christmas day craziness.

We have mincekin pie. Mincemeat on the bottom, pumpkin on top. The best.
