Dwayne,

I know you are planning another 'rolling rally', this time on Route 66. I'm posting this here in case anyone else is interested. There is 'part one' of a series of articles, on route 66, in the Jan. issue of "Trailer Life". They have also featured a book, "The Route 66 Encyclopedia" by Jim Hinckley, available on Amazon.com. It looks like both could provide you with lots of information landmarks and stops and could be used as a travel guide.

I did the entire Route in 1999 via motorcycle. I know there have been
some improvements along the way since then. It is an interesting and
worthwhile trip.

I'd be happy to add any insight if needed.

Dwayne,

I know you are planning another 'rolling rally', this time on Route 66.<snip>

On our way to the Balloon Fiesta, we ran all of RT66 we could find. We picked it up in Joplin IL, and had a grand time of it. It was great even when the navigator (me) lead the driver (Mary) down 3 1/2 miles of 9 foot wide Pre-1937 pavement in Miami OK. You could afford to miss this section, there wasn't much to see. There is a lot to see elsewhere and much will be missed if you travel the interstate.

That was 2008 and I had done a lot of research (some standing at book store shelves) and we worked with the guide book "EZ 66". It is wire bound so it handles easily. It is designed to be as convenient going East or West.

EZ66 RT66 Guide For Travelers ISBN 0-9709951-4-8 (19$us @ Amazon)
The author (Jerry McClanahan) maintains an update page at http://mcjerry66.com/ez66.php that contains current news of changes.

Our copy has been loaned more than a few times.
Someday, maybe will run the Albuquerque - west.
Nice to have dreams.....

Matt

Several good online guides out there. This is probably the best.

Before we bought the GMC I had often thought about making this run in our 65 2+2 Mustang. Now, I am thinking the GMC will be the best way to travel. Either the Mustang or the Vdub will be in tow. When I was a child, 1960, my parents took us to California, much of the trip was on this hiway. My father videoed everything while raising his kids. Used to embarras us. Now, I am glad that he did. Much of his filming was done along this route, with his brand new 8 mm camera.
The convention next Fall is in Branson. That is not far off 66, south and east of Joplin. Some may want to travel 66 coming and or going. We are thinking about just getting on and heading west after the convention. Or, hooking up with Dwayne when he travels across on it.

Hi Dan

Would love to have you along. I am getting lots of info sent regarding the
Route. What I need is info on Major and mInor
GMC Conventions, Rally's so we could schedule our travel in between or
being able to join in.

Dwayne, There is a lot of interest in the 66 roller. I have people in the
Gmc community ask about it on a daily basis. It is going to be a really,
really big shew. Perhaps the associations can plan their events on our
travel plans, not the other way around. (vbg )

Dwayne, the only one I know along this route is the convention at Branson in September. When we make our trip we will just jump on over at Joplin and head to California. Am not planning to get on any narrow parts of it like Matt did though. Might park the GMC and drive the narrow part. We have no real plans yet as we are still performing our part time work with the courts.
