I've only driven this machine for about 30 miles, but with seven or eight
year old tires I'm sure I'm pushing my luck.
I am looking through the "archives" for that list of tires that will work
on this thing, but can't find it.
Can someone help me with finding that, please? It had several discussions
besides just tires.

I believe I have the Alcoas. So the rims are 16" right?
- the Tires are currently LT225/75 R16 load range D.
the spare is a Bridgestone "V-Steel Rib 187" ALL Steel 10 ply rating, and
although is a simple tread design, looks in much better shape than all the
others. The two fronts are Dunlop A/T 110/107R. and the other four are
Continental LT225/75 R16 M+S load range D.

I am tempted to keep the spare and replace the other 6. The spare shows no
sign of any cracks at all. All others are well over the recommended
crack/age limit.
I was reading that I should go to Load Range E due to the side stress the
unique design of our GMCs subjects to the sidewall as they sort of skid
(inner front and outer rear) around sharper turns/corners.
Is it true that Michelins have a better warranty? (7 years).

I am planning on going to Express Tire due to an overpaid bill and their
free financing. (they owe me $150 :) UNLESS there is significant savings
elsewhere. Does Costco do RVs? Are they less?

Here's what I just got a couple of weeks ago: Big O Mesa A/P2's, $135
each and made by Cooper in Ohio
http://gmc.mybirdfeeder.net/GMCforum/index.php?t=msg&rid=0&th=24259&goto=191957#msg_191957

Have taken two very short drives with them (no more than 20 miles each
trip) but have no complaints so far.

Sean, Thank you - I had Coopers on my Infiniti 4x4 (recently stolen and
wreaked!) but I was very happy with both the long mileage and the handling
of them. I was of on dirt roads a lot as I sell land and like to explore
the the back country so had M+S tread. So the Mesas are made by Cooper -
yeah.
Not a bad price with a good warranty. The GMCnet "forum topic" was saying
these things need Truck Tires. So I am wondering if this qualifies.
What about alignment?
Ciao!
Tim

The tires I bought are LT, with an E load rating. Definitely truck tires.

Regarding alignment, I'm currently in the "try not to think about it"
phase of the relationship with my GMC. Ask me next year :)

I have Michelin LTX M/S LRE and been happy. The Coopers are USA made and I haven't heard any negatives but don't have any GMC data to share. At 7 years you should be just starting to shop unless they are weathered from exposure. I hope to get more years with indoor storage. The largest consensus on this forum would probably recommend LRE rag-walls over all steel construction. So that's what I did. Cinnabar says all steel, but tires have changed a bit since that mandate

Up until 4 years ago, I always used michelins on my Grand Caravans. They paid off in very high mileage, so the cost per mile seemed to work out. Then I had some problems with the sidewall and found that the warranty isn't what it used to be. I switched to Tiger Paws.

For your coach, ultra high mileage probably won't happen. A survey I read somewhere showed average coach use is 7k miles prr year or less. That seems about right. I'd go for the best price on a reputable tire. The US Cooper's Sean found look good to me. JimB uses something else, but I believe he said the price was 135-ish, like Sean's.

Consider that the GMC suspension was designed for bias ply tires. The all steel tires are much stiffer and lack sidewall flex. I had poly sidewalks on my last set of GMC tires, and I believe that they rode quite well. Lt225/75R16 would be the closest size to the OEM tires. Load range E can carry a heavier load than Load range D for the same air pressure.
Wal-Mart is now carrying a House branded Chinese made tire that suits the GMC. Price in MS is $109. I have bought 2, and will finish out the other 4 as funds allow. I purchased these solely based on Wal-Mart's 3500 stores and their replacement policy.
Other than that, I was very happy with my Cooper's.

Thanks for all the info, Tom. I bet a 10 ply Poly sidewall is plenty.
The price is pretty good on the Chinese, I'm trying to buy American these
days -those Mesas that Cooper makes
look good to me. But I do like the Wally Mart convenience for warranty
work. Hmmmm.
I would think Express Tire is pretty convenient too. Will look at their map,

Tires are like oil is like gas-- everyone has good luck with one brand and swears about it, has bad luck with one and swears at them.  Heard about the Chinese tires at Wally World yesterday, what can I say, there are good reasons to do it-- mainly backing.  I recently took a set of Chinese "Sampson" brand tires off of a Cabana Motorhome that was causing sketchy steering.  I have found many folks use Michelin and their reasoning is why not.  Then you say "but I can get descent tires much cheaper and you can!  If the average is 7000 annual, in 5 years those Michelins were expensive per mile if that's all you drive.

I use this rule of thumb which seems to have good logic to most--- if you plan to really "roll that ball" and are on the fence just go close your eyes and write the check for the Michelins-- you know they are good tires and when someone sees them on your coach they think-- "Man, that guy is riding on gold!".  If you are working a tight budget and do not expect to do a Forest Gump cross country tour, I use a Korean tire "Nexen" brand 225/75E radial HT (highway tread).  They come recommended by my uncle who used to be general manager of the Michelin. Bridgestone, Gilette, BR Goodrich and others dist. here in the SE.  They look good, I have personally driven a set non stop from Florida to Bakersfield and did great.  As yet, I have not heard word from anyone I have installed Nexen tires that they have had a blowout.  If someone is seriously concerned about "road hazard" warranty (tires are made so well today that if you are cool about not running over
stuff on the road, the chances of having actual tire failure is very low) hey, life has no warranty!  I pass through these tires, we sell them for $140 a tire.  They run ads in Road & Track along with other hotsy car rags so they seem to work well for my people and that's what I use.

I can get the Coopers and don't for no other reason that the Nexen's work well.  RC, if you would like the Coopers, gimme a call, it's most certainly fine with me.

With a true and balance on my Amermac Truing machine, most any tire will run smooth.

Well, I just got six shiny new wheels in from JimK and my tire guy is headed for the Cooper warehouse to pick me out 6 tires with new build dates on them.  It had the original steel 16.5s on it, and four year old Firestones.  I flat - spotted them when the brakes got wonky last weekend, so I'm glad I decided to treat me to wheels and tyres for xmas.  It looks like I'll be about5 two and a half GMC Units or a bit less  into them mounted and rolling.  I'll let yall know how the Coopers work out.

That is why you shop around with the telephone.

While you are at explain that you only want tires with recent date codes. They shouldn't have any problem getting tires with less than 6 months age on them. (if they do not want to meet this, Call someone else.

When you get to the shop and before giving them the keys to your rig, you should check the codes with YOUR OWN EYES. (You would be surprised how many tire shop people have no clue about the date codes!) Here is how to do it:

<http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11>

When you are satisfied, hand over the keys.

A thought on what to do with tires nearing the "age" out before they wear out:

Sell them on Craigslist.

You might need to sell them in sets of four to get the best price, but you _might_ be able to recover 50% of the new tire price, plus you avoid the disposal fee that is charged most places.

I stopped off yesterday at the tire place, and told th manager/owner I'd be dropping off the wheels today.  He said he's find out when the trucjk is headed for the warehouse he uses - probably today or tomorrow, and he will go pick six off the truck which are new.  Which is why I deal with local merchants for a lot of stuff.

When you are satisfied, hand over the keys.

A thought on what to do with tires nearing the "age" out before they wear out:

Sell them on Craigslist.

You might need to sell them in sets of four to get the best price, but you _might_ be able to recover 50% of the new tire price, plus you avoid the disposal fee that is charged most places.

I mentioned the issue of age to the Big O dealer before I ordered my
tires. They assured me that the tires would be new, and sure enough,
the tires were only six weeks old (date code 4312) when they were
mounted on my coach at the beginning of December. :)

Good job. In five or six years you'll be glad you watched out.

While not normally a problem when getting popular tires at a high volume dealer, I have actually seen (with my very own eyes) 7 year old tires being sold as new.

While most managers at tire stores know about the dates, I have had to teach most of the workers (AKA: Tire Monkey) that they exist and how to read them. (IE: Q: why are you replacing this tire? It looks fine to me. A: Because it is almost 20 years old. Q: How do you know that? ....)
