But, without a thermostat, when it's only quite chilly, rather than
brrrrr cold, it would probably wake you up when the sweat soaked your
bedding. That's not a good thing.

Ron,

That happened to us this past summer, we decided on nights like that to run the temperature up to a comfortable temp and then turn
it off and go to bed with the heat strip off and the furnace set very low like around 60°F or so. That worked better.
