In response to Michael of "Gettin There"

I too have a 23 footer (once a painted Desert) and have the insides stripped out. The Onan has gone, along with the wiring that went with it, including the 110v stuff. It is intended to go 12 volts with photovoltaics as much as possible. Can you give an outline of the system you have installed, panel sizes, controllers, inverters, batteries etc. I am in the serious design stages and would like some knowledgeable person to offer some good directions.
I do not intend to make this GMC a luxury living machine, but rather a "off to the mountains for the weekend" thing, only occasionally at a campground.

Hello sorry I just saw this!

My system is fairly easy, and very expandable. (when funds get back up!)

I use (4) 100W Mono Panels. (may use the other 2 I own but haven't had a need yet)
I use a 45 amp MPPT charge controller.

I use a 300w wind turbine, where I camp its usually windy at night, just to keep topped off when the wind blows. And a dump load, sometimes I use it just to heat up water for free!

I use (6) 6v batteries Interstate Extreme, for the house power. I may upgrade to 8, but hasn't been needed yet. If I do, I already chopped out the bottom of the cabinet walls and vented them so I can easily add another (2) to (4) 6V batteries if needed.

I have many things that just work off of reg 12v that are very low consumption.
All DC motors I use PWM motor controllers to slow speeds down.

I use a large modified sine wave inverter. I would of liked a pure sine wave, but nothing I run is sensitive to know the difference. I would of went pure sine wave however but at some point cash is a issue!

I use all LEDS. I have 10 dual lamp lights wired in throughout the house. But I always try to pick out low consumption LEDs, and have liked ones in the 3500K range or there about.

I took out the water heater and went with the EZ 101 instant on.
Frig is a small LP frig that sips LP.
I do not use the regular LP heater, and I will remove it (even though I rebuilt it, and upgraded the circuit board). I use a Mr. Heater Big Buddy.

I ripped the ceiling out, and added 2-4" of double bubble. Covered it all in rolled metal foil, and painted it with rubber paint.

Roof I painted with ceramic/rubber ultra white paint to edges of the roof.

Walls, sides, dash, bath are a combo of expansion foam, fiber glass insulation, and double bubble.

Floor I did outdoor carpet with rubber backing.

Windows Tinted then I covered with Koolaroo, on each window. I can drive with it on my windows, 94% reflect. Not the standard Koolaroo, but the special very reflective one. Plus window shades.

I insulated the under cab area.

I have a lot of work to do still, but its "gettin there"

G'day

Count the number of times the first person pronoun "I" is used in this message as it provides a good insight.

My location is listed in the location.

Rob, I'm glad to see even someone as seasoned in age as you have learned how to cut and paste google links. It makes you appear much smarter then you truly are. Now if we can lead a old dog to new tricks maybe someone will teach you how to google how to have a much nicer personality. It must be miserable to know that people really dislike you so much, but are far more polite then to just say it in public. I get endless off line emails from people that feel your more moronic then I. I think you still have hope, I know your at the tail end of life, but its not to late to change.

Michael,

You're talking through your hat again. MANY of us here know Rob
personally; we all recognize that your characterization is totally wrong.
That makes it consistent with your usual postings: Ridiculous and
repugnant. We do not tolerate the kind of "flaming" you insist upon using.
You'll do us all a favor by growing out of your infantile behavior -- or
leaving.

An even more seasoned oldster than Rob,

Ken H.

Michael, Rob has held his tongue in dealing with you pretty well. We are not here to bash each other as you seem to enjoy. I rather doubt you have any emails about Rob from others on this net. You have absolutley no clue what kind of guy Rob is. Maybe he does not agree with everything you post but that does not give you the right to appoint yourself as a judge of his character. Most folks on here have met Rob in person and know how helpful he is to anyone needing anything he can provide. I suggest you find another forum to post your opinions on. We really don't need you here, as long as you continue with the negative attitude you presently possess. I seem to recall you showing up here a couple of years back and asking lots of questions. Everyone was good to respond and try to help. You leave for a year and come back as some kind of solar expert, thinking none of us agree with anything you have done. That is not true but the more you brag on yourself the less we want to hear from you.

Poor Form, sir, Poor Form indeed.

OBTW: Over half of the readers of this forum do NOT see the "location" on the on-line forum as they only receive emails. Keep them in the loop if you can. I could go into why they want to know where you are, but I do not want to be accused of "Poor Form." Twisted Evil

Michael,

Everyone on this list knows Robs personality (well so I thought ). There is nothing wrong with his personality it's just that he's a " pedantic bastard".

I have seen some come out with outright personal attacks such as yours on this forum and I have to wonder how those people feel when they re visit those postings later after the anger subsides and the defensive twitch has calmed down.
I would imagine they feel like a horses ass.

Wow.

I don't generally respond to these kind of posts, but Michael, this is so far wrong in so many ways, I feel compelled to respond.

You've gone about fixing up your coach as you see fit and we all appreciate your enthusiasm. We're an odd bunch of cheerleaders who rarely see an opponent, and regularly cheer for the free-thinker - odd-ball - one who travels the path less traveled.

Rob has become one of the most helpful and insightful resources on this list. I'd wager you've benefited from some of his postings. I have.

My guess is that, once sober, you'll want to recant this nasty and personal attack. Not simply because its so poorly written and not just because it's a childish and flaccid attempt to attack Rob, but because it diminishes your own stature and makes you look like an ass. Why you would post something like that in a public forum is beyond me.

Rob needs no defending. He's physically capable of tackling nearly any foe and mentally superior to any grade-school taunt. I for one find the delete key more effective for my blood pressure than dwelling on something like this but I like Rob, though I've never met him.

Rob is a friend to many. Your attack is unwarranted and should be recanted. There is a reason, Mr. Radioactive, that we shield ourselves from poisonous emissions. They do nothing but harm.

My location is listed in the location. ...
Mine was too, until I figured out that the location info from the forum does not propogate over to the email side. I got a lot of "please post your location..." from people that, it turns out, were email subscribers. I don't like redundancy, so I cleared it from the "location" field of the forum and added it to my sig. Now everyone gets it, not just the forum users.
As far as the rest of your post, you must have misread something in one or more previous threads to believe what you do. Try rereading the ones that you disagree with and see if they still say what you thought. It could be that the word "Southeast" was misread as "Southwest" or something as simple as that.

To whomever split the thread...Thank you for removing my name from this side of it. I don't know how this degenerated into a bash/defend Rob discussion, but I guess I will have to chime in on it once again.

Rob is a very helpful guy. His posts are always detailed and informative. I always am interested in what he has to say (on a subject that I'm interested in, in the first place). Granted, those of us that have met rob in person know this about him. To others who only see his posts on the forum, it might be obvious that he has kind of an "East Coast attitude" that might be hard to take, but that's just him.

Oh, and he's not at "the end of his life", although I guess someone in his mid 60s would appear to be ancient to a 12 year old.

The reason I initiated this thread in the first place was to provide information, requested by Rob in a private email, to help him and others who might be interested in doing something similar. I hope the original post was helpful. This will be my last posting on this subject, although I will put it to the test this weekend and report back under a new thread title.
