Did a quick search and saw this was hit on in a few topics. But Just curious if a grey tank can be added and how without to much trouble.
Not ready to do mine yet, but will have to address it before its camp ready. Black water tank has a crack, due to PO not
winterizing it. So I will have to repair tank anyway, Or... take it out and add 2 new ones.
Sure looks to me like there is space to the rear of the RV behind the black water tank.
If I pull the black tank out I could rerout Grey water lines back and just let toilet dump into black tank.
So OK oh wise ones tell me its easy and show me the way !

Joe,
It is not impossible, but it is pretty hard to do. I know of only one
person that added a grey tank to cover the kitchen sink by putting a
small tank in front of the gas tanks. The bath and shower drains
cannot be rerouted without total changing the tank layout in the
back. I can tell you up front that I never really needed a grey tank
or missed having one in the previous coach that I have owned.

Depends on how you define "to much trouble."
Yes, there is room under the coach for two waste tanks. You'll need to be able to route some of the waste lines around inside the coach.
Yes, it has been done. Most Coachman products, (Royales and Birchavens) have two tanks.
Separate tanks allow some tricks to conserve water, like a separate system to use gray water to flush the stool. It is also useful to be able flush the macerator (or dump hose) with gray water after dumping the black tank.
Single tanks are easier to manage, as you have fewer choices, and they have fewer parts so cost less. Also the contents of a single tank are a little "thiner" so they are easier to pump. (While not much of an issue now, I understand Thermasan system <http://www.amphicar.net/library/thermasan/thermasan.html> worked better with a single tank.)
What tank does what is mostly designated by the location on the stool. If it is a rear bath, the rear tank ends up as the black tank and the front tank ends up as the black tank with a side bath coach.
WHY? Because it is much easier to run the gray water plumbing to a remotely located tank than it is the plumbing from the stool.
Conversion to two tanks can be done. If it is "to much trouble" is up to you to decide.

ON/OFF Valve leading to a Hose Bibb outside to have gray water (kitchen water) into a outside pail. Use gray water to wash the GMC and keep it shiny without filling up the tank. One of the best mods I did yet.

Joe,
I can't think of any way of adding a rear gray tank, and not have a plumbing nightmare.
But, my thought for adding about a 20 gal or so gray tank is:
1) Move the first crossmember (the first one after the trans crossmember) forward so the gas tank would fit in the space.
2) Relocate forward the 2 gas tanks in their new location.
3) Install new gray tank in the location where main tank was,
the sink, lavatory, and possibly the shower could drain
into the tank.
The tank discharge could run to the back on the left side through the crossmembers and connect with main drain.
The exhaust pipe, fuel lines would also need some adjustment.
It's easier if the frame is out, but it's doable from underneath also.

The PO of my 73 installed about a 15 or so gal. gray water tank when he remodeled. The rear has a queen bed on the passenger side that lifts up to expose the fresh and gray water tanks. The bathroom sink drains into it via a flex pipe. The shower floor has a drain that is pumped into the gray water tank. The gray water tank has a valve at the bottom that opens to drain into a pipe through the floor into the black water tank under the coach. I did a quick You Tube to show how it is set up. Please forgive the poor video as it was a very fast job. See it here:

My royale has a black and grey tank. The grey is rearward of the black as you hypothesized. Finding a suitable location u der the coach would not be the big job. The more challenging job would be to separate and re plumb the drain/vent lines without removing the interior finishes. I could post some photos of mine if you wish.

I knew there where some brave souls on here that could figure it out.
Re routing lines would be easier right now since most of my interior is still out. Might get froggy and pull the black tank and see just how it is plumbed. Does anyone have a picture of the top side of a black tank that shows how the plumbing enters?
I have to pull it anyway due to a crack that needs to be repaired..
I really think a grey water tank would be worth the effort. maybe not the cost but the effort..lol

Joe, I THINK there are two holes, one for the toliet near the front and another below the back bathroom wall for the shower and sink.
I was looking at mine tonight. Seems to be a guy could pull the fresh water tank and cut into the gray water lines and re'route them to a new tank with the drain in the floor by the generator or water tank. You'd have to run a new drain line for the sink somehow around the drivers side to the rear of the coach and back into the new tank but I think that is doable.

Hey Kerry.. also looked at mine this afternoon. My coach is open now, sort of. I can see the toilet pipe going into the top of the black tank. between it and the fresh water tank the shower and sink pipe go throuigh the floor. I think you could be right. If I raise my freshwater tanks a couple inches and instead of going through the floorcontinue towards the rear and then go into the new grye water tank behind the black water tank. The kitchen sink could be routed back and into the greywater tank. I'll look at it tomorrrow nd see where ith would come out..Note to self, need to vent black tank off same vent now. through roof.
