We're considering going from San Jose to Denver.
Not the best time of year for it, but this is
unfortunately when family gatherings and holidays
tend to be.
Just curious what folks think of I-70 between Grand Junction
and Denver. How bad is it on the scary mountain driving scale?

Are you taking the GMC or another vehicle?
Having driven Denver to Nevada on I-70 many times in the winter you must
remember this time of year >10,000 ft mountain passes (there are two) make
their own weather that may not be reported on the radio, it could be
snowing, there can be ice on the road at any point that is in the shadows.
This said, I-70 is a good road and well maintained and would be no problem
in a car. If you are bringing the GMC use I-40 and come up I-25. Raton
pass is the only pass (8,000 ft) and it is normally clear and no problem.

The Eisenhower (?) tunnel is scary enough in a car
in the Summer. I can't imagine a M/H in the Winter!

A bigger concern to me would be I-80 between Reno and Sacramento. If you do choose the I-80 route from California eastbound and are still worried about I-70, you could always run I-80 to Cheyenne and then south on I-25 to Denver.
If I-80 (or US 50) out of California is a problem then you have to go south and use I-40 which makes it a much longer trip. The last coach I moved from the San Jose area east bound, I had to go the less desirable I-40 route because of bad weather on I-80 up near Truckee.

I-80 has very heavy truck traffic on it through southern Wyoming.
There is always the chance of high winds in Wyoming and Northern Colorado
as well.

thanks guys. We're still debating GMC or van.
Depends on the weather mostly, and how brave we're feeling.
The GMC is a whole lot more comfy, but more stressful to drive.
I was thinking south first to I-15 through Las Vegas
then up to I-70 east. Roughly the same time and distance
as I-80 through Reno, but one less scary mountain pass
and about 300 miles shorter than going the long way
around through Albuquerque.
Whoever thought having major family holidays in the dead of winter
was a great idea didn't have to deal with 3000 mile road trips...

The scenery could be awesome as well along I-70.
There is an excellent bakery in Avon, Colorado called Columbine Bakery. We
ate breakfast there and the three egg omelet was the lightest and fluffiest
I have every eaten, then there is the baked goods! mmm mmmm

I ran into a decent amount of snow in Wyoming on I-80 one time in October. The best route is always determined by looking at the weather. I like the I-70 route the best if the weather allows. Colorado does an excellent job at keeping that road clean and there is not much truck traffic. It also is very scenic.

Amtrack goes to Denver, but not much difference in price vs airfare.
My son just came back from San Jose a couple of months ago on the

I have done it several times from Chicago through Denver and on to Salt lake, Reno, and Martinez. Emeryville is the end of the line. They offer senior, Veterans, and AAA discounts on the fares. 15% discount for over 62.
Lots of people get on at Denver and off at Winter Park. I have gotten off (westbound) at Salt Lake, Reno several times for the Air Races, and also Martinez. Do not count on it being on time. Sometime they are on time, sometimes they are early and sit in a station and wait, and sometimes they are hours late.

I checked into flying several weeks ago. Interestingly, it was
about the same as driving ($800-1000 for two people). A lot more
expensive now, of course, as the holidays are closer. But, the
TSA has ruined flying and we couldn't bring our dog, so we
opted against that.
Hadn't even thought of the train though we've enjoyed it before.
We'd still have to leave the dog at home, but it's much more enjoyable
than flying these days. Cheaper too, unless you opt for a room.

I'm sorry but I'm going to disagree with you regarding the TSA. While some consider the searches intrusive I think they do a good
job of keeping us safe in the air and will ask the following question in response to your comment.
Do you think 9-11 would have occurred if the TSA had been in existence in 2001?

The TSA is the primary reason I do not fly commercially any more. When I was working I use to fly 8 or 10 flights a month. Even after I retired I flew frequently. On 9-11 I was in St. George, Utah with a scheduled return flight out of LasVegas a week or so later. In the 11 years since 9-11 I have taken 2 round trips and 4 one way flights.
I'll fly privately because I do not have to screw around with the TSA.

I've not seen any reason to think the TSA is any better than what we had
before. Navy Seal Team 6 routinely traveled without any special ID and with
firearms, so that it would be normal to them if they needed to. I've not
seen any reason to think they are effective, their searches are a joke.
Bruce Schneier ( http://www.schneier.com/ ) doesn't think the TSA has done
anything, and he's as good an expert as I can come up with.
I think they have been useful at making the people more subservient to
random authority.

Hmmmmm, "what we had before" allowed four teams of terrorists on four different flights with box cutters. Is it your contention that
the current TSA would have allowed / not found them?
The TSA have confiscated the following out of my luggage because I'm a dummy and keep forgetting to put items like this in my check
in luggage:
1) Finger nail clippers
2) Cigar guillotine cutters
3) Beard trimming scissors
4) Money clip with a 1 1/2" blade
They confiscated a cross stitch from Helen on one trip back to the USA.
Please advise the source of your information that Navy Seal Team 6 traveled on commercial airlines with their weapons. The story I
"heard" was that the TSA stopped them from carrying their weapons on a military aircraft when it landed in the USA.

Bruce Schneier ( http://www.schneier.com/ ) doesn't think the TSA has done
anything, and he's as good an expert as I can come up with.
I think they have been useful at making the people more subservient to
random authority.

You can carry firearms and ammunition on commercial flights in checked baggage. I have done it for at least 40 years both before and since 9/11 and the TSA.
In fact the have loosen it it up a bit. In the old days I had to show them that the weapon(s) were unloaded. Today under the TSA rules I just tell them that they are unloaded and they take my word for it. They no longer inspect them.
