I bought my sofa from Eurotec on 7 Nov 2001 for $535.00 and I picked it up
at the factory. I paid extra to get it longer, reaches from the kitchen to
above the front step.
A width greater than 47 or 48 inches takes up most of the aisle up forward.
To get a wider jack knife sofa in a GMC you would have to put it cross wise,
thus no aisle, front to back.
I have a full size bed in the back cross wise, very comfortable, but the
person next to the window can't get out unless the person up front gets up
too. A particular problem also if you have claustophobia.
Good luck on your project.

I plan for it to reach from the kitchen to above the front step too. But mine would take up ALL of the aisle when folded out to a bed. And, like the back, the person closest to the wall/window will have to crawl over someone to get out of bed.

Looks like the floorplan I want is on ebay right now.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GMC-Motorhome-/190755828750?pt=RVs_Campers&hash=item2c69eef40e

I am going to kick myself if it goes for around $8k - $9k.

I think that was just relisted on ebay and the previous auction did have some bids in the $6-7k range. If so, I'm guessing he reset the opening bid closer to his reserve.

Well, there _IS_ one way to prevent that, you know!

Is "UA" sorta really just the same as Baja Tennessee?

Ahamilton, Have you seen these in the gallery:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g3089-interior-upgrades.html

Specifically this one:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/3089/89_p981.jpg

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/3089/89_p981.jpg

and this one:

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/3089/89_p982.jpg

I'm not sure I understand the difference in a Jackknife sofa and a DAVO It looks like the flexsteel Jackknife in the photo has only one of the two back cushions that flip up into the upper bunk where the DAVO ends up with both the upper and lower the same 30" width.

If I had a 26' GMC I would like to have something like that. A 23' doesn't have a place to put a dinette behind the shotgun position.
The difference between what I call a Davo and a Jackknife is the Davo becomes a bunkbed and the Jackknife becomes a double bed.
Nobody in GMC land that has, or had, a jackknife sofa has offered to sell me one, so I am guessing that means those that have them are happy with them. Either that or the sofas don't make a bed any bigger than what I already have. I am afraid of the top bunk on a Davo because I am fairly certain the "boy" in the top bunk would weigh enough (tossing and turning) to pull the supports out of the roof, or at least bend the roof. As I said before, the supports are not that far from the roof AC and nobody is likely to convince me that a 200 - 250 lb person in that top bunk, added to the weight of the roof AC, is not going to cause damage and potential injury.
I found this, and the owner says it makes a bed 75" X 54", so I plan to buy it. I can use the mechanism to build one that makes a bigger bed if I am not happy with the current size.

None of the GM upfitted coaches (and none of the transmodes that I know of) came with jackknife sofa's. So the lack of anyone wanting to sell you one from a GMC motorhome is not surprising.

I can live with any type of sofa the right length that converts to a bed the right dimensions. It doesn't have to be a jack knife.
I don't know all the furniture options that were available, so don't know if there was a sofa in a GMC that made a double bed, or just a "GMC double" bed (about 10" too narrow to be a real double bed).
At any rate, something that converts from a sofa about 74" or 75" to a bed about 74" or 75" X 60" (64" would be even better) would scratch my itch.
I haven't found one, so might just settle for 75" X 54" for the time being.

When we renovated our front interior I installed this jack knife sofa, it is
absolutely awesome. We wanted a sofa that folded down into a big bed so we
could take adult friends with us, so far everyone who has slept on this bed
absolutely loves it.

Bed size is 76" x 54".

There were several big challenges to installing it was this:

1. The water heater was too high, so I removed the water heater from under the
sofa and installed a tankless water heater behind the refrigerator.

2. The original Suburban Furnace was too high, so I removed that and replaced it
with a Suburban low profile unit.

3. I wanted to keep the sofa as tight to the exterior wall as possible when it
was in the sofa position, but when you fold it down into a bed it has to move
away from the wall first. So I designed and built a slide system, mounted a
wood frame on that and attached the sofa to it. Then I attached 2 linear
actuators to the wood frame. To fold the sofa down to a bed I flip the switch
and the actuators move the entire sofa away from the wall far enough to allow it
to fold down. After we fold it back up to the sofa position, I hit the switch
and the actuators move the entire sofa back tight against the wall. There are a
few photo's of my installation here.

I wouldn't demand the automation, but yeah, that is the idea for behind the drivers's seat. It will need to slide, just not by electricity. I don't need to mess with the water heater or furnace, just need to remove the cheesy dinette.

Automation was actually the easy part, 2 cheap 12vdc 12" linear actuators off of
Ebay and a little wiring.

Right now Walmart has that exact sofa I used on sale for $299 each, I just
purchased 2 of them for the basement rec room.

The specs for this item seems to show that it
requires 83 inches in length for a 73 inch bed
length. I guess that means that the ends are
each 5 inches wide. I don't think that would
even FIT into my ex-P.B. coach, to say nothing
of providing a decent sleeping length!

The specs for this item seems to show that it requires 83 inches in length for a 73 inch bed length. I guess that means that the ends are each 5 inches wide. I don't think that would even FIT into my ex-P.B. coach, to say nothing of providing a decent sleeping length!

The two ends get thrown away and the metal mechanicals get attached to slides or the cabinet on one end and the step on the other (behind the driver's seat). I think I measured 75" from the cabinet to the vertical drop off behind the driver's seat of the step.
If designed with the seat/bed cushion level with the cockpit floor, you could put your pillow on the cockpit floor and stretch out even if you are close to 7' tall. Or build a padded foot stool the same height as the bed and put it in the area between the fridge and the sink for someone 9' tall. Not bad for a 23' GMC.

Here's a home made sofa that opens into a full queen sized bed. Only works in my coach as my captain's chairs can be moved out of the way.

Home made is plan B. If it is 75" from head to toe, and 60" wide, it would correspond to what is called "RV queen" or "short queen". I can go up to 64" wide before it hits the sink cabinet. If I go home made, I will make it fold out to a bed 75" X 64".
For now, the plan is to buy a second hand RV jack knife sofa that folds out to a full bed (75" X 54") to get on the road in the Spring. Since it looks like I am going to have to do some serious cabinet work to get the oversized fridge in, and reconfigure the rear for a dinette that converts to what is called a full XL size bed, that will be enough interior work for the coming year.
