Joe,
Not a real useful answer, but I just went through an exercise on those:
The red plastic on mine was badly crazed, and growing worse with the
years. At Amana, someone sold me a set of pretty nice ones of the same
size for $3. Since the red looked good but the chrome was coated with
fungus, paint, corrosion, or something, I took them to my buffing wheel for
refurbishment. Trouble is, when the buffing heated up the red plastic, it
popped off of the chromed base.
Since the chromed bases on the mounted GMC were in nice shape, I decided to
try removing only the crazed red letters, using a heat gun. That worked
wonderfully. AND, Surprise!, the good red letters were exactly the same --
fit the old chromed bases perfectly. The only change was that the "new"
"M" was not flat like the old one (had been mounted across a centerline
crease); the heat gun and a heavy weight to flatten it while it cooled
fixed that.
A little silicone adhesive behind each letter and now they look 'most like
new.
The moral of the story is: "Take one of your old letters with you to the
junk yard; you may get as lucky as I was."

Speaking of insignia, has anyone done anything like this
http://www.davebarton.com/VolvoPrancingMoose.html for the GMC?
