I got a proper alternator  belt - finally - for my toad.  After replacing all the hoses and belts and the water outlet housing (it is plastic, the original one had cracked). Put the slow charger on my (new) battery and got it up to full.  Hit the switch, grunk - but no dim of the interior lights.  Clean connections, good ground, 12 on the solenoid contact.  So, the electric self-commencer has expired.  It's a gear reduction drive on VW Diesels, with 3 planetary gears around the output shaft, and an external bushing in the bell hounsing which I'll also replace.  Removing the unit means removing the motor mount bolts.  Sigh.  I've had VWs for many decades - air cooled and water cooled, gas and Diesel.  This one has been a bigger pain than the rest combined.  I'd dump it except it tows beautifully, burns almost no fuel even when it is running, and I like the handling.  And it's paid for.The saga continues.

Our driveway insists on a 4wd for snowy days. Sometimes we have to drive
up and down it half a dozen times or more to pack the snow down so nobody
gets high-centered after the next snow. Towed a Suzuki sidekick 4wd with
a Brake Buddy for a while. It's a true off-road vehicle. Changed to a
Honda CR-V (a freeway four wheeler), for the softer ride. My back thanked
me for that. Six wheel disks on the coach, now, no tow'd braking system.

Over the years we have had a 1992 small chevy blazer, 2dr,4wd. Went lighter with a 1998 Geo Tracker 2dr 4wd rag top, towed well road rough. 2001 Chevy tracker 4dr, 4wd, AT, Nice towed, towed well road well. 2009 Honda FIT, AT paddle shift, great car until Honda put the CVT in the car and eliminated the ability to flat tow. Presently have a 2011 Honda CRV AT loaded, it too now has a CVT. 2014 all came with a CVT. Except for the first 2 the rest never recorded miles on the odometer.

Since Grace does not like to operate a Stick Shift we tow automatic trans
with the trans pump system with various toweds the last 40 years.
Since most toweds we pull were over 2,500 lbs. I use the US Gear brake
system as there is no hassle clipping the plunger on the pedal.
I tend to tail gate, so the braking system is a must for me. Did you know
that the coach stops in shorter distance with the toad brakes working.
Since were a major BLUE OX Dealer and installer, we do the full tow
,electrical and brake or all.
Again, I say call me as I can advise you and your never obligated to
purchase anything from us.

Nobody has mentioned towing a Chevy HHR. Several GMCers had them,
including us, a 2010. Automatic tranny. Weighed 3300 and we pulled the
fuse to keep towed miles from wracking up. Used a Brake Buddy. Good setup.

Still see quite a few on the road.

We pull my 2006 Chevy HHR I've had since new. 2.4 LT with automatic and about 160K on it now. I've got a fuse switch installed, so I just flip it over when I put in the brake buddy. It tows well, but more importantly, as a family of 5 on the road, it has great space in a relatively light package. We can load everyone and the dog in and still have some cargo room once we get where we are going. If they still made the HHR, I'd probably buy another. I've been on the hunt for a loaded 2.4 LT automatic with tow package and lower mileage. If I ever find one that's worth it, I'd pull that trigger.

Other than the Grand Wagoneer my dad passed down to me when I went to college, the HHR has been my favorite and probably most useful vehicle ever. It's just a plus that it's relatively simple to work on and the components most likely to have problems, front suspension and brakes, are easy driveway projects.
