Hey All;

A couple of years ago I was heading up the Grapevine (big long
grade in CA) and the floor started smoking where the driver's side
muffler hangs. Seems it was really hot outside and I was towing a
trailer with a buggy on it and I had the throttle mashed to the floor.
I guess the muffler got a little cherry red on me. Anyway, I pulled
over at the Flying-J almost at the top of the grade and put out the
still smoldering floor/carpet. Since it was pretty much all down hill
from there, I continued on to the next town with an AutoZone in it. I
bought a couple of metal drip pans, some wood screws and a bunch of
washers. I made some standoffs with the washers (about 20 on each
screw) and then installed the pans over both mufflers. Haven't had a
problem since. Today I'm fixing the damage. Here's some pictures of
the repair...

Dan's hole in the floor was bigger than yours.

We screwed a piece of metal to the bottom of the floor over the hole and I bought him a small tub of premix concrete at the local hardware store to fill the hole. I do not know if he ever filled it or not.

He also replaced the mufflers with Jim K.s straight through pipes.

Hey Ken;

He still has the hole in the floor but is planning on fixing it. I
can't put the single muffler on because of the Stretch with it's black
water and grey water tanks filling up the space for a single muffler.
I had my son install the new muffler system when we bought the coach
and this was the setup that we had to use.

I forgot to say that when I cut out the old piece I did a 15 degree
cut all around (I was trying for a 30 degree cut but I couldn't fit
the saw around the steps). Then I did a matching 15 degree cut on the
"plug". Once I got it all matched up, I used wood glue and angled some
1-1/2" finishing nails from the "plug" into the good wood to set
everything in place. I don't think with this setup that the "plug"
will be able to fall through. Just what I did.

Do you realize how many years ago it was that I bought him that concrete? We were headed to the Santa Rosa GMCMI rally at the time.

Maybe if I embarrass him enough with this posting he will mix up the concrete and install it.

Nope, just now talking it over with Teri. We are going to fix it just like Gary did. Hey, why get in a hurry? Got to think things through, ya know. We been waiting til we decided what kind of carpet to cover that area with.

Sounds like me.

Mike, you are a man after my own heart. I knew when we met in Shawnee I liked you a lot. Now I know why.
