We are now in Las Vegas and tomorrow our next major stop (one in between
overnight) is at Jim Hupy's in Salem Oregon.
is it best to 15 south west then over to 5 or how about 95 North through
Reno.
Not sure about grades on the 95 North and condition of road.

Dwayne, we traveled Reno to Las Vegas on US-95 last year and don't remember any significant hills - just a long not-very-scenic ride.

95 north out of Las Vegas to Reno is a good road mostly 1 lane each direction Tonopagh ( gold field) would be the highest elevation at around 6000 ft.,easy climb. Kind of a lonely road not much traffic. I haven't driven it past the Reno area as I usually cross over to 5 off 395 at Susan ville.at that point when I'm going to the Oregon coast. If you have never been to Death Valley I would suggest you hang a left at Beatty(374) look at the ghost town ruins in Rhyolite and continue to Death Valley for a day or two. After Death Valley come out to California 395 take it up to Susan ville (a little ways above Reno) and cross over to 5 on 44,89 unless you plan on seeing Crater lake in Oregon. 395 is higher then 95 (highest at 9300 ft in the Mammoth Lee vining area but pretty scenery and a good road. You won't have a problem climbing it as I pull my Toyota over it when I go south.

80 is a mess. One lane and snow slowed down the removal of the K-rails to get it back to more lanes.

Dwayne,

Go here: http://www.weather.gov

There are some fairly high elevations between you and Salem. The weather is a little unseasonable. The white stuff has been forecast along parts of your route. It may have passed but if not it would not enhance your experience.

You shouldn't have a problem with snow,we had a storm come thru yesterday with snow above 6000 ft. We didn't have any here at 5,000 ft. I can see snow and clouds up at lake Tahoe but all the major roads in Nevada and California are clear of snow we have a 20% chance of light snow at Tahoe. The weather is clearing and warming it should get to 70 deg here by Sunday it was a high of 52 deg. yesterday. Cal roads is 1 800 427 7623. There is a fair amount of road construction on major roadways but few long delays. If you are coming up 395 you are welcome to lay over at my place we have plenty of room for your GMC and I have tools if you have any repairs that you may need to do before you get to Jim's place. I'm 1 mile east of 395 between Minden & Carson City
I'm on the Black List.

Also (total 62 mi) north 95 (of Beatty, NV) and west on 267, there's Scotty's Castle at the north end of Death Valley NP. Then can go south to Furnas Creek on Scotty's Castle Rd ( I can't say how good that road is now, its been about 15yrs since been on it). The scenery has a beauty of its own, and it's the best time (temperature wise) of the year to go there.

We drove that route two months ago. I prefer it to 15. Pretty easy
driving, nice road nearly all of the way.

I have gone through Las Vegas to Reno on US-95 and US-50. Not a bad drive for not being Interstate. Look at "terrain" in google maps to see how "hilly" it is.

I do not like most of the roads from the Reno area to Klamath Falls OR. As one lady at a gas station stated, "GPS's do not work around here." US-395 is ok, but it doesn't really go the direction you need to go...

Anyway, from Klamath Falls to JimH's place is nice on that side of the mountains. But might be a bit cold.

Maybe cut from Susanville Ca on CA-89 across to Mt Shasta and I-5? (I've never driven CA-89.)

Thank you to all those who wrote in. We have decided to go on US 95 to
Susanville then on 44-89 to Mt Shasta and the balance on I-5.
If you are along this route we would love to meet - even for a brief time.
Best regards

Could you report on what you find from Susanville to Mt Shasta? I have never went that way but just from the area, it has to be a pretty drive. Make sure you fill up when you can... Two places gas can get expensive are in California and out in "the wild." You'll be in both.

That is the best way to go it is a pretty drive with nice 2 lane roads plenty of pine trees and a couple of small lakes or ponds for good measure probably no more then 6000 ft at best,it is no-ware near as hilly as 5 in Oregon. It is a much better choice then the nightmare drive from Reno over 80 to the 5 and shorter too. 95 from Vegas to Reno is flat and barren mostly except at Tonopah & Gold field. I would fill my tanks in Susanville as the gas will be much higher afterwords till you get into Oregon and don't forget they won't let you fill-up in Oregon the attendant will fill it for you.
