Was coasting down a long hill on my way to MGM GMC for some maintenance & the engine started to backfire blowing out one muffler. Turned out my old points ignition failed and caused the backfiring. Miguel recommended replacing the ignition with a Pertronix Flame-Thrower D1100 and replace the blown dual Flowmaster mufflers with a single Spin-Tech 8743. Take a look at my You-Tube link below to see and hear the new muffler. Also take a look at my burnt floor from the old mufflers. Guess I need a shield of some kind under there.

Paint was done about 12 years ago by previous owner, don't know where. I have had the coach 2 years.

George,

Thank you for sharing the video -- well done.

When going to the single muffler should a heat shield be considered on the older coaches with the wooden floors?

Worked well.

Coach is looking good! Seems a bit shinier than it was a year ago at WS.

While it might be just the camera angles, I only see charred flooring over the space of the passenger muffler. Normally this indicates a blocked DRIVER's side muffler... and over heating of the crossover in the intake manifold. (At sometime in the past.) While you have fixed the muffler, it is something to keep in mind.

Nice sound. A second rear mounted muffler might reduce the sound level without messing up the tone.

That is the identical muffler and placement I put on TheWarPig. Fits well, sounds good. Miguel steered us both right ;)

I went to a local muffler shop to have some leaky pipe replaced ‘till I can afford the Stainless unit from Jim K. Ended up doing more than I ought to with a similar muffler up front and, since I was concerned about the noise, a glass pack in the rear. It still sounds like a big Olds, but at some RPM’s the rumble in the cockpit is louder than before.

Also - I don’t like the tight bends this muffler shop used to get to the muffler. I’ll have to reconsider...

You are right, the charred floor is only on the passenger side and was there before I owned the coach.
The engine was rebuilt for the PO some time ago by Bob Lamey so the crossover may have been plugged at that time. Is there a non-intrusive way to determine if it is plugged?
PS: Glad you remembered our coach!

A shield is kinda one of those "can't hurt" items. No downside so just do it. Some have used baking pans. If nothing else just some sheet metal spaced off the floor by a few washers will cut down on the radiated heat.

As far as determining if the manifold was blocked off or not just get an infrared thermometer and, with the engine running and hot, scan the intake. If the crossover is not blocked the manifold will be much hotter there than elsewhere. Another way to check is to see if you still have the carb heat stove connection on the intake manifold. On mine that area was easy to determine by the burned paint on the manifold. (Also by the charred acorns I found when I first got the coach. See here:

George,

The OEM choke has a tube that goes into the crossover; if it has been blocked there will be a wire connected to the choke.
