Ok folks:
Need your help. I have seen overhead consoles from mini-vans in pictures and have a line on several but don't want to pick it up without knowing how to mount them to the ceilings ...
would anyone be able to guide me to do this ... ???
I need measurements or some kind of a reference point so I don't drill a couple of holes into the roof accidently.
are there stringers or frame members in the roof that will hold some screws. And what vehicle overhead console would work best?
Appreciate the help.
Thanks

I would recommend taking the front headliner cap off to see where the stringers are as there is nothing up there to mount the overhead console that would support any weight and not pull the headliner cap down. When I had mine off, I did mount a piece of plywood between some of the stringers to provide support when I eventually mount an overhead console that I bought on eBay (from some GM SUV).
If you could loosen the rear mounting strip on the front cap and peer forward into the space, you'll see how little structure there really is, and I don't think you would want to drill holes through the roof structure.

I just screwed mine to the headliner. I used big screws and it seems to work. the console isn't that heavy really.
I used the overhead console out of an Old S-10 blazer. It has lots of lights an outside thermometer and compass.
I have pics on my photo site;

I also show how to make the compass work, without the hack the compass won't update the temperature 9 unless you have a VSS signal to feed into it, then it only updates when the vehicle is moving

That is the same console I acquired, but my headliner cap already has a downward bow in the middle, so I didn't want to put any additional weight on it. The console does seem to extend back far enough that it probable can be screwed into the roof crossmember at the end o f the cap.
I love the speaker placement on the custom fabricated console base. It should allow you to have both right and left channels balanced for both driver and passenger if you use the outer speakers to finish the stereo pair. Now, if I can only make a fiberglass mold that would have the proper contours, oh great, another project to add to the list!

I added speakers and the fiberglass/bondo to make them fit was rather
heavy. No way I was going to just screw the assembly into the headliner.
I had added a piece of wood between the ribs of the roof. If I remember
right I glued it to the roof and screw it from the side thru those
fiberglass ribs. The extra support screw you see in this pic was
actually up there before the console, covered with a white cap. Now it
doesn't show at all, of course.

As for the channels in those speakers, I have the Right channel going to
both of them. Seemed like Left and Right so close together might not
sound great.
