I had ordered a 7th LTX from Tire Rack to round out my set of 6 to 7 to go with the Alcoa classic I just got from Jim K. I figured a 12+ year old LRD spare on a steel isn't really a spare. Tire Rack told me 3 weeks ago it would be 6 weeks till Michelin did a new run. Now today I found out there will be no more made with the Raised Outline White Letter to match my other 6. So I called Michelin, who sent me to Coker (as they sold remaining invetory to them I was told), who just got out of the 'recently obsolete' tires and are now only on the realy classic stuff and redlines etc. Coker sent me to Quality tire as they sold them all to them, and I dead ended with no tire. I called my local Tire Rack installer, KO Tire and Kevin sent me to TCI who found some in LA or Vermont. So he will order one for me at full price, and I can't be concerned with date stamp at this point as I want 7 matiching tires. SO beware if your run these LTX M/S as the ROWL are done and I suspect the Blackwall is soon to be replaced by the new 'improved' model as well. If you need a blackwall or 2, hurry up and get them now while the gettin's good.

Does this mean I can mix 16 and 16.5s as long as the same size are on the same axle? Tell me it's so - I can't drop 3 Units all at once for shoes.

John,
Don't let it bother you...
Next year we start our change to 16" - 2 at a time for three years. A year after the last pair, we buy one new for a spare.
If at the end of that five years, I have seven matching tires, I will be truly surprised. If they are even all from the same company, that would be nice, but I bet that doesn't happen.

Johnny,
Why would it not be so?
The 16" with 225 75 16 is supposed to be same diameter as 16.5 with what ever came from factory. Other wise the speedo would need recalibration.
It's at least close enough that 16 on one axle and 16.5 on another will not matter.
That's my story and I'm stickin with it- till some one ejimacates me.

The front axle should be the only one that would benefit from having the same size (rolling diameter) tires. All the rear tires are independent so mixing sizes wouldn't affect straight line running. As far as handling, I don't know how much of a difference it should make as the rear shouldn't be sliding around on a Motorhome. You're not driving it like it's a Porsche!

Johnny,
It would be extremely bad if you were running the radial tire on a
bias ply rated rim which has happened in the past. You need to check
your rims to insure they are radial rated. The radial stamp ( an R in
a circle) is located on the back side of the rim opposite the valve
stem. As for running radial and bias ply tires on the coach at the
same time. I would suggest that the tires on each axle are the same
type. Radials on the front would greatly improve your handling. The
bias ply tires are very noising when first moving after setting for a
long time or over night. The flat spots have to get round.

Nope, both are welded and basically the same rim, but one is not be
rated for radial tires and is not stamped. The non radial rated rim
has had cracking problems and loss of air issues when used with a
radial tire.

The radials put more stress on the wheels. Hence they had to change the wheels to radial rated when radials first appeared as an option on the GMC. NOW---- a lot of old muscle car guys put the good old Radial TA on pre radial wheels and seem to live to tell about it. However, in a passenger car the weights and stresss are so much lower. If you remember the first proto GMCs had Toronado 5 lug car wheels and they got cracks during testing with bias ply tires so hence the production change to the duelly truck 8 lug 16.5 wheel.

Somehow, this has become a garden of misinformation. So:
\
My 23' coach fits Firestone Transforce radial tires on 16.5 radial wheels. They work quite well.
The initial question was whether I could replace the 16.5s two at a time with 16s, cos 6 wheel and tires at once would be beyond my means. It appears that I safely can. Now, as to the question of mixing radials and bias ply, the tire makes say you can. My experience is you shouldn't, you will get the worst opf both worlds in handling. Now, few if any of us are gonna run slaloms in a GMC, so the mix probably wouldn't matter. On an Austin Healey, it made a hell of a diofference, and I wouldn't do it agan.

My tire guy found some in warehouses. I have one on the way to keep a matched set. RF will be the new spare and new tire will go RF. Now I need to order the locking spare nuts from JimK.
