Lots of questions here, and it's the first time I could not find some reliable information from "Googling" it.
I didn't have any dye for Duracool, so I vacuumed the system. It held vacuum overnight. So I charged it with R134 with dye.
It worked fine. Then the coach sat for about a week.
The front of my compressor is leaking enough to leave a nice, 6" spot on the ground that lights up very nicely under UV light.
So, I have a compressor leak.
Questions are:
1. I have another compressor on the parts coach. Is it worth trying it, or since it's been sitting for a while not charged, should I just forget about it?
2. Is this a mens mall item?
3. I see some reference to replacement with a Sanden unit. Experience?
Thanks.

wonder about trying this
http://www.duracool.com/Duracool/acsolutions.html
----------------------------------
*Duracool® SystemSeal™
*Designed to repair minor leaks in the evaporator, condenser, gaskets, "0"
rings, connecting fittings and metal lines. Duracool® SystemSeal™ was
designed to eliminate costly repairs in the form of replacement parts and
expensive service labor. Duracool® DuraDry™ may be used safely in most
air-conditioning systems. (Duracool 12a®, Duracool 22a®, Duracool 502a®,
CFC-12, R-134a, R-22, and R-502.)
If leaks does not empty the system within 24 hours Duracool® SystemSeal™
will usually seal the system with one can. Two or more applications may be
necessary if leaks persist.
----------------------------------
or a similar product (try the 403 system, since you are already there)
what do you have to lose?
the theory was, this made the seals expand and stop a slow leak.
might be worth a try since you are already set up to run a test
good luck

Why not just seal the front of the compressor? All you need is the seal (I'm waiting for one) and the little kit of tools to install it. I >know< Larry Davick has such a kit, because I borrowed it and am waiting for the seal to get here to install. As soon as it does, I'll report back how the install went and send Larry his kit back.

Iy hjasn't got here yet. I aske Nick at Applied for one. I need top call and see what's with it. I can ask him for two if you want. Either this weekend or next we can have a resealing party, it looks like about a two beer job. There's a you tube video on the install someone posted the link to a week or three back. Doesn't look to be a real nightmare, and I'm home the next couple of wekends. I think.
There might be somebody here in Atlanta who has the seals, I'll ask around and let you know.

ABSOLUTELY!
By the way - that double lip seal kit is widely available. I just looked at Amazon and found this <http://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-15-30948-Fuel-Seal/dp/B000C986LE> It’s the Delco 15-30948. This is not the original ceramic kit, but from what I read on a Pontiac site (if memory serves me) this is an improvement on the original design that GM incorporated in later model compressors.
The toughest part of the job for me was removing and replacing the compressor. Pulling the clutch with a loaner puller from the auto parts store and then getting in to replace the seals was easy. There is one c-clip inside the compressor that can be challenging to remove. I think the c-clip pliers I bought from Harbor Freight would not go that deep into the compressor, so I used two ice picks. Holding them like chop-sticks removed that clip.
It’s a job that was outside of my comfort zone, but I had little to loose. The seal kit was less than $25 and the tool kit I bought was one of those lucky finds on ebay. There is a very good shaft seal diagram in my album <http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g5805-a-c-shaft-seal-replacement.html> Once into the thing I felt foolish for wasting so much time fretting about it. It’s easy. Nothing mechanical on these coaches was designed by masochists, believe it or not!

Dolph replacing the shaft seal is the way to go in my opinion also. Larry's ( the seal expert) tools will certainly make the job easy. It was a nice plus that Larry came across the double lip seal conversion. This is the way to go because if you use the single lip ceramic seal there is a chance the shaft is worn too much where it takes a set, The newer type seal will take a set in a virgin area of the shaft.

Cool!
Dolph -
Send me a snailmail address, and as soon as Ted and I finish with them, the tools are headed your way in a small USPS priority box. I'll include Larry's return addy and you can send them back to him. Please don't let them get away, I'm on the cuff for the kit till he gets it back, since I got it first. They will ship either Monday or Monday week, depending on whether we can get two sets of seals bfore this weekend. I suspect with the info Larry posted, we can.

Gene,
If you read the blurb below you will note that it does not mention the compressor.
I called Dura Cool to discuss the best options to fix my leaking system and the gentleman I spoke to reiterated that it would NOT
fix a leaky compressor front seal..

I guess I look at stop leak of all kinds as postponing the inevitable (wheelbarrow and garden cart tires being the exception).
So, I'll get some fish for the seals.

During my experience with compressor seals mostly with the A 6 GM style,
when the seal is kaput, so is the shaft that it rides on. The non standard
duplex seal that some here have used gives you the best chance for success
because they ride on a different part of the shaft than the original does.
Remember that if the seal fails, the rest of the stuff like the bearings
are not far behind. On The GMC the compressor is such a bi### to change, it
kinda makes sense to put on a good rebuilt one. Just sayin.

Let's take that a little further, Jim.
I have three of these compressors. One on the Coach. Another on a parts coach. One on my 1970 Cadillac.
The one on the parts coach seems to be operative. It's been discharged for a number of years.
What's the effect of it sitting?

Dolph, if the compressor have been in a dry environment and the ends have
been sealed so no debris could enter the Ports they could sit for years,
particularly if they still had oil in them. Before you place them in
service, drain the oil and flush them with a suitable cleaning agent (back
when it was not a banned substance, we used to use r-12) then hook up the
lines and pull a vacuum on The system to see if it holds for 24 hours.
Should be good to go if you the correct amount and type oil for the
refrigerator that you use.

Thanks, Jim:
I'll pull the one from the parts coach and give it a shot.
I'm going to rebuild the other two anyway (partially for experience, mostly because I need one for the Caddy).
