I need to replace all the fasteners on my window latches (6 sliding
windows, 12 fasteners total).

Applied GMC sells them
(http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/797), but $8 each seems a
bit high to me.

Can anyone recommend a less-expensive source for these fasteners? I'm
open to creative suggestions :)

The one's on Jim's site are for the toll windows. Not what you need.

Sean,
I used rivet nuts (lso known as well nuts and well-nut threaded
inserts),and #6 flat head stainless screws.

http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-rivet-nuts/=jgarhl
first item
http://www.mcmaster.com/#flat-head-machine-screws/=jgatmx
6-32x1/2"

It is a very tight fit for the rubber rivet nut to go through the hole in
the window.
The way that I did it was to moisten the cylinder part of the nut place a
6-32x2"
through the window hole from the outside, thread the 6-32 screw into
cylinder
part of nut and use a pry bar or claw hammer and pull on head of screw
until the
larger diameter of nut is resting against the inside of the window. This
allows for
a cushion between the window and latch.

Tom,
Sean's is a 1973 so his window latches are the same as the toll windows.

Sean,

Not sure what has failed on your current latches -- but JimK also sells just the screws for mounting to the glass. They are a plastic that will not deteriorate with sunlight exposure.
http://www.appliedgmc.com/prod.itml/icOid/797
Not sure how many you get for $8 --
The rare piece for the 73 windows is the piece that mounts to the fixed frame.

Good luck,
Dennis

That's the part I need to replace, 12 total. $8 gets you one of them, hence
my search for something a bit less expensive.

Sean,

Looks like I misread your original message -- anyway -- when I bought the screws they were about $1.25 each -- not TOOO bad a price.

I have bought these from Jim Bounds and do not remember them being THAT expensive. They are metal with a small plastic sleeve to protect the glass.

While following the directions (given at the time) for the felt replacement, I broke one. I replaced it with "sex nuts" from the local Ace hardware. I understand they have several names, but only one that I remember.... Twisted Evil

They look like his: <http://www.boltdepot.com/Sex_bolts_and_Mating_screws.aspx>

I have also seen them used to connect loose leaf paper into a booklet... Binder posts(?) You might find them at an office supply place... I haven't

Anyway, I suspect they are cheaper than $8 each, but I seem to remember I paid more at Ace than I did from JimB. (Plus JimB had the little plastic sleeves.)

I would call JimB... first, then maybe stop by Ace hardware if you are not happy with Jim's answer.

Regarding the first item, were you referring to the
"Screwdriver-Installed Rubber-Insulated Rivet Nuts"? Should I be
looking at the first item at
http://www.mcmaster.com/#standard-rivet-nuts/=jgj1ug ?

Thanks again,
