mean we all,(GMCers), are going to have to drop our tanks...
Everyone I know who has done it once ---- has done it twice

so hope to do it just one time
- metal lines on the top of the tanks
- holes in the floor for new senders / electric pumps
- vent lines that only go up hill
- drain lines connected so there is only one tank, sender, etc
- senders rebuilt

I removed my tanks in August of 2011 and then had to again this past
June.....had one of the new super duty hoses crack, it's not the most fun job
but what can ya do.
If I have to do it again I'm going to have metal lines brazed to the pickups
that extend out to where they are accessible. Should have done that this last
time but I was in a time crunch.

30R14 ?? is that the hoses you are using I thought 30R9 was expensive ? I'm presently doing mine also and found mine was redone in 1983 with gates 30R1 hose and it is still in pretty good shape after 29 years using only California gas. Ray's idea of brazed hard line to the senders would eleminate a potential leak but would removing the sender with the tank in place tough. I'll have to think on that one.

I used the best barrier hose available to connect hard lines to the lines
from the senders. Very short pieces. I ran the hard lines all the way
across the tops of the tanks and extended them two inches past the edges of
the tanks to facilitate future soft line replacement without having to drop
the tanks. I just don't think there's much of a threat of damage from new
fuels to those short pieces of hose (barely long enough for two hose
clamps). I was worried that brazing hard lines would lead to sender damage
or future fatigue cracks around the brazes. Everywhere I could, I replaced
soft lines with SS lines. I eliminated all fuel lines forward of the
headers by running an insulated line up the firewall, across the intake
near the valve cover, to a FP regulator and then to the carb. I replaced
the mechanical pump with a block off plate. Here's pics:
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/carburetor-stuff/p25479-fuel-line.html
For the line up the firewall, I used foam insulation for piping, wrapped
with reflectix. You'lll have to ask Jim Garmen if he has any issues with
vapor lock, I never did.

Does anyone know what the plastic fuel lines are made of on most newer fuel injected vehicles? If that stuff was available in rolls, it might be a better choice for some installations. Only problem would be finding a method of making leakproof connections.

Les, it is available in rolls but it is mega expensive. To make a leak
proof connection, use your double flaring tool and only perform step one on
the end of the hard tubing. This raised, half flare, will ensure a leak
free connection. Do not use worm gear type clamps. Use only those that
are made for fuel injection high pressure connections.
