There is a good chance we will not make it to Amana with the coach.

I went out tonight to fix a few things. One was the AC charge. I think I found the leak and so I charged it with Duracool. After I shut down the engine I had coolant spraying out of my aluminum radiator. It is spraying on to the core support about 1/2 way up on the passenger side. I can not tell for sure exactly where the leak is but it appears to be in the tank itself which means dropping the radiator. Rob Mueller said he would top by on Wednesday to help me remove it. After that I will need to get it repaired and reinstalled all by by Wednesday night. Unfortunately I have to be in Cincinnati at 5PM on Thursday so that kills that day for working on the coach. On Friday I have to go to Amana with windshield installation stuff.

So If if is not finished by Wednesday night, the rally is out for us.

For the people who are having windshields installed, It will still happen. I will drive my Blazer out there Friday without Laurie and our new dog and get the windshield installations done as scheduled. Then I'll return home on Sunday. Rob Mueller will haul the painter's scaffold out there in case I do not make it.

I just do not seem to be able to get a break this week.

No Laurie? And, no new dog? That ain't right. Sorry to hear the unhappy news.
Of course, we all hope our coaches make it. I've got my fingers crossed.

G'day,

I got a call from Ken about this situation last night. In typical KenB fashion he did NOT ask me to come help him R&R the radiator
his concern was getting the scaffold to Amana so WE (me included) could get our windshields R&R'd! I told him we'd just strap it to
Double Trouble's luggage rail and that's that!

When he described the problem I asked if he had anyone there that could heli-arc repair the radiator. I was REALLY po'd at myself as
I brought GeneD a sample piece of aluminum brazing rod I bought in Australia at a trade show after watching the vendor "weld" a torn
beer can! I forgot to bring some for MYSELF! DOUH!

At any rate Google Maps says it's 72 miles from Elkhart to the Porter County Airport in Valparaiso. We'll leave here early and I
reckon we'll be in Valparaiso between 9:30 and 10:30.

Having said all this as far as Ken not making it to the Amana Convention goes I'll quote Gene Kranz (Apollo Flight Director) when
the subject of loosing the Apollo 13 astronauts came up; "not on my watch!"

Hmmmmm, I should say "not on OUR watch!" as we've got GeneF's procedure to follow!

http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/g3181-radiator-replacement.html

On a final note if anyone else wants to drop in and give us a hand we wouldn't refuse!

We'll be at the:

Porter County Regional Airport
4207 Murvihill Road
Valparaiso, IN 46383

My cell number is: two six seven two six one three zero seven one

Regards,
Rob M.

Tom,

We will try to get it fixed but I am not optimistic as I do not have the time and help available to get it done in time to make it there. I have to be in Cincinnati on Thursday so that day is completely out. I have to travel to Amana on Friday to be there on Saturday and Sunday for the windshield installations. So Wednesday is my only real available day. I'm going to try to find my welder buddy today (Tuesday) and see if he is available tomorrow to weld it should we get it out. I just hope it is the tank or a weak seam and not the radiator core. I'll know more Wednesday. If I had another radiator, I would install it but I really do not want to spend another $700 to $800 for another new radiator and I still could not get one here in time.

I will make it to Amana in my Blazer Friday evening to get the windshields done as planned on Saturday and Sunday. So for those of you who signed up, do not worry. The windshields will still happen. I am just an administrative guy and not a worker bee. The installers are planning to leave here headed for Amana at about 4 or 5 PM on Friday. The freight tracking shows that the truck should deliver them today in Amana. We should be ready to go Saturday morning.

Get optimistic in a hurry. If no Laurie then the races will not be much. Teri needs Laurie there to help her.
I am optimistic for you so let Rob help and you will be there.

Hey Dan,

On that old radiator of yours, What kind of shape was it in? The reason I ask is that radiator is still sitting in my Hangar after all of these years. I'm wondering if it is usable.

Ken, there was nothing wrong with it when we pulled it out. Check it and put in if you need to. I just wanted the aluminum radiator before we hit the desert in July.

Ken,

Our Current Plan has on I-94 in striking range of Valparaiso (on the way to ES) Wednesday afternoon. If you need something moved or need a hand then - just say so. If you need something else (Rob says he has the scaffold) please say so soon so I can hitch the cargo rack to the rear.

Oh ....
Sometimes I still hit send too soon....

The aluminum brazing rod is something that most radiator shops have around these days.

If you need me, ring the cell it is on the black list.
But 734 five five two 3523.

We are packing for Kentuckiana today and plan to be underway early tomorrow.

Just so you know, Mary's car came home on a hook last night. It looks like the alternator, but that is all the looking it gets until after we get home.

I have a radiator already out of the parts coach. I talked to Ken, the radiator is currently getting tested for leak, pressure and flow. When all checks out I am driving to meet Ken in Jackson Michigan at 3:00. Hope all goes well with the test.

Ken,

You know it won't the be same without you around. I'm hoping the angelic and
heroic efforts being made will pay off, especially a good radiator so a swap
can be made.

G'day,

Here's the 12:45 update:

1) John P is coming over tomorrow AM to give us a hand
2) Ken has noted there's two places he should be able to get the aluminum rad heli arc'd.
3) Ken has organized a replacement rad with Mike T
4) Dan's old rad is option #3
5) Albert B and Dan S will be arriving in Valparaiso tomorrow night - they've volunteered to be second shit on the rad repair team
if necessary,

I am confident that Ken and Laurie WILL make it to Amana in their coach!

Regards,
Rob M.

The more interesting question is how I can take a look at GMCnet after
weeks of absence and without even trying find something to bust your
chops about.

Ahem! Back to GMC content--we are actually using our coach this weekend...
