The coolant recovery tank is a diagnostic tool for the GMC
http://www.gmcmhphotos.com/photos/data/6179/Coolant_Recovery.pdf

- top off, the radiator by filling the recovery tank when cold
- have enough volume in the tank, to allow for expansion in the cooling
system- when hot
- if the level in the recovery tank, goes down (when cold) - you have a
leak in your cooling system
- if the level does not raise when the engine is hot - your radiator cap
may not be working
- you should see anti-freeze in the recovery tank
- and more - read the manual slide

if you change the recovery tank, make sure the volume of the new tank is
sufficient for expansion

Gene,

Did I read somewhere that our radiator caps should be
changed every other year?

Are you running a 9 pound cap?

Thanks
